CLARION - The 23rd annual Clarion University Classic Golf Tournament, to benefit the University's Waldo S. Tippin Scholarship Fund, was held on Friday Sept. 10at Clarion Oaks Golf Club and was termed “A Big Success” by athletic director Dave Katis.

The tournament was sponsored by Pepsi, S & T Bank, Wienken & Associates and PSECU.

Although the amount raised on Friday was not immediately known, the Golf Classic typically raises near $40,000.

“This year's tournament was a huge success,” said Katis.  “A large part of that amount is due to the fantastic support of our four corporate sponsors. They really helped push us over the top. I'd also like to thank the Clarion Oaks Golf Club, our generous hole sponsors and all of those who donated prizes and played in the tournament. We have received tremendous community support and we're very grateful.”

The "Classic" tournament started with a total of 96 in 1988, 110 in 1989, 128 in 1990, 148 in 1991 and 152 from 1992-97. A full field of players was 144 players from 1998-2003. The field has been full since 1991.

Prior to starting the event, Katis introduced new President Dr. Karen Whitney to welcome all golfers. Katis then held a moment of silence to honor those who were part of the tragic events on “9-11".
The US Army Recruiting Station in Clarion marched into position and presented the colors, and then all service personnel who were in attendance at the event were also honored for their service to America.

A buffet dinner was held following the event at the Clarion Holiday Inn.
