Men’s Basketball - 1977 Clarion University Grad - Elementary Education

Carl Grinage, a talented guard on Clarion’s men’s basketball teams from 1974-77, played in all 108 Clarion games during his career. An NAIA All-American and a PSAC-West First team selection, along with Pittsburgh Press and Post-Gazette selections, Grinage helped Clarion to a 27-3 record in 1977, a PSAC-West and NAIA District 18 title and a trip to the NAIA National tournament. In 1977 Carl averaged 18.7 points per game, handed out 154 assists, shot 84% from the foul line and 50% from the floor under head coach Joe DeGregorio. In 1976 the Eagles were 18-9 overall and Carl dropped in 14.2 points per game, dished out 145 assists, shot 82% from the foul line and 46% from the floor. He also averaged 12 points per game and posted 105 assists in 1975 and six points per game in 1974 as a freshman. In his career he scored 1,378 points (5th at Clarion) and handed out 534 assists (1st at Clarion), plus set the school record for free throw percentage (82.8%). Carl has been an Elementary Education teacher in the Fort Cherry School District for 28 years, as well as a basketball official for 28 years. A 1973 graduate of Washington High, Carl has a son Carl T. Grinage III and a daughter Tai.
