Cecil Willoughby was an outstanding two-sport athlete at Clarion who played football for the Golden Eagles in 1947 and 1950 and basketball from the 1947-48 season through the 1950-51 season (four years).
A letterwinner and end in football, Cecil played for Waldo S. Tippin in 1947 and Benton Kribbs in 1950.
On the hardwood, Willoughby had an outstanding career as a forward/center for the Golden Eagles. He set a Clarion career record for points scored with 849 in 65 games played, averaging 13.1 ppg, also a school record. He broke the record of 646 points set by Doc Willison. He also set a school record with 285 career field goals made.
In his first two seasons Willoughby averaged 13.3 ppg then jumped that to 14.8 ppg in the 1950 season scoring 252 points in 17 games. In the 1951 season, Cecil’s senior year, he was team captain on the Golden Eagle team that posted a 15-2 record and was the Pennsylvania Teachers College Champions with an 8-2 record. Clarion also won the Western Pa. Class B title, and Willoughby was named a first team Pittsburgh Post-Gazette West Penn All-Star. He averaged 10.9 ppg on a team that had all five starters average in double digits.
A three-sport athlete and a 1947 graduate of Beaver High School, he had an outstanding 15-year stint as boys’ basketball coach at Freeport High School including being named WPIAL Coach of the Year in 1967.
Retired an residing in Lakeland, Florida with his wife Martha Jane, the couple have sons Mark, John and Benjamin. A daughter Bonnie passed way in 2005.
