Connie Jo excited women's gymnastics fans wherever she performed, but especially in the friendly confines of Tippin Gymnasium. The Ames, Iowa, native captained Clarion University Division I National Champion teams in 1976 and 1977. She was the Division I All-Around National Champion and Balance Beam National Champion in 1976, than came back in 1977 to win the Balance Beam Title. After graduating from Clarion with her degree in 1977 in elementary education, she attended Indiana State University and received her master's degree in physical education in 1979. Connie Jo became an assistant coach at the University of Florida in 1981 and helped her former coach, Ernestine Weaver (an Inaugural Inductee). to an AIAW Division I National Championship. At Florida until 1983, she then worked for the United States Gymnastics Federation (1983-86) and the United States Olympic Committee (1986-88).
