Women's Basketball was not very successful in its early days as a program, but Doris Black's tenure at Clarion University changed all that. Inheriting a program that was 5-35 in its previous two seasons, Black used 1984 and 1985 as building blocks, recruiting the future stars of the program. In 1986 Clarion posted a surging 11-15 record, was 5-5 in the PSAC-West and actually won 5 of its final 6 games – a harbinger of things to come. In 1987 the Golden Eagles jumped to the head of the pack posting a 16-9 overall record while winning the PSAC-Western Division with an 8-2 record. Black was named the PSAC-West Coach of the Year. Then, in 1988, Doris led her Golden Eagles to a school record 18-9 overall record and first place in the PSAC-West with an amazing 11-1 slate. The Eagles finished their season winning 14 of their final 16 games. Sports Hall of Fame inductees Kim Beanner and Cheryl Bansek played for Black, along with standouts Lisa McAdoo, Tammy Holman and Jeannine Tyler, all in the Eagle record books. She took a position at Agnes Scott College from 1988 – 1991 and continued in Education through her retirement in 2010. A 1966 graduate of Roosevelt High in Dayton, Ohio, she is a 1970 graduate of Central State University where she was a 4-year letterwinner in basketball and track and field, and 1 year each in volleyball and bowling. She currently resides with her spouse Dot Young in Stone Mountain, Georgia.
