“Ernie” Widmar was a four-year starter on the Clarion University Football team from 1958-61 under Hall of Fame player and coach Ernest “Turk” Johnson. His freshman and sophomore years Widmar played halfback on offense and was a starting defensive back in the secondary. In 1959 the Golden Eagles posted an overall record of 6-1-1, and at that time (1926-59) was the second best record in school history next to the perfect 9-0 season of 1952. In 1960 Clarion was 3-4-1, but Widmar had an outstanding season at offensive halfback. Clarion’s leading scorer and return specialist on the season, Widmar rushed for over 200 yards and three touchdowns, and returned a punt for a td in leading Clarion to a 34-7 win over Shippensburg. As a senior he again was a top performer on the offense helping Clarion to a 5-2-1. Widmar received several post season honors during his football career at Clarion. Also a standout baseball player in 1959 and 60, he was Clarion’s leading hitter in 1960 and played third base. He retired in 1999 after 37-years at Blairsville High School, and was a Hall of Fame head football coach at Blairsville for 21 years, retiring after going undefeated in 1986. His teams won five Appalachian Conference Titles and he posted a 126-67-3 career record. A 1958 graduate of United High School, Widmar and wife Sylvia live in Dilltown. They have two daughters Jacqueline (Clarion ‘94) and Kimberly (Clarion ‘96) both Clarion grads.
