Garry Barton was an outstanding wrestler at Clarion University from 1969-72. Barton was Clarion's first NCAA Division I National Champion, winning at 134 pounds in 1972. That same year he won the PSAC individual titles at 134 and placed 3rd at the NCAA Division II Championships before winning his title and also participated in the East-West All-Star Classic. Garry helped the team win the PSAC title in 1972, plus place 6th in team scoring at nationals. He had a career record at Clarion of 46-25-l. A 1972 Clarion graduate in elementary education, he earned an M.S. in physical education from Rhode Island University in 1979. Formerly head wrestling coach at Rhode Island (3 years through 1979) and at Clifton High School (Clifton, NJ, 3 years through 1982). Barton has been an outstanding wrestling coach while employed as a teacher at nearby Clearfield High School since 1982. He was named Class AAA "Coach of the Year" in 1986 and inducted into the PSCA Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1987, among numerous other honors and championships.
