Jerry Haslett was an outstanding football player at Clarion University from 1982-85. A 4-year starter, he played defensive back, strong safety, returned punts and was the holder for PAT’s and field goals. As a senior in 1985 Jerry was named a Second Team AP “Little All-American”, First Team Kodak All-Region, PSAC-West, Pittsburgh Press & Post-Gazette, plus earned a Dapper Dan Award. In 1985 the Eagles were 8-2 and Haslett had 100 tackles, 6 interceptions, 4 sacks and returned 32 punts. In 1984 Clarion tied for first in the PSAC-West and was 7-3 overall, while Haslett recorded 120 tackles, 10 broken-up passes, two fumble recoveries and returned 18 punts. In 1983, a year Clarion won the PSAC and PSAC West titles, plus went 9-2, Jerry had 67 tackles, six broken-up passes and one interception. In 1982 he notched 39 tackles and four interceptions. In his great career he totaled 329 tackles, 11 interceptions and 30 broken-up passes. His brother Jon was an All-America defensive end at Clarion from 1981-84, and his brother Jim was an All-American at IUP, played for the Buffalo Bills, was defensive coordinator of the Pittsburgh Steelers and head coach of the NFL New Orleans Saints through the 2005 season. A 1982 graduate of Northgate High, Jerry currently is a teacher in the Pittsburgh Public Schools. He and wife Sherry have a daughter Jamie and a son Michael.
