Tom Kurts was an extraordinary football player at Clarion who played on both offense and defense, plus was a big contributor as a punt returner on the 1966 PSAC Championship team and the 1967 PSAC-West winners. On offense Kurts was a big play producer for head coach Al Jacks. Over his career he had 115 rushes for 808 yards, averaging 7.03 yards per carry (#2 at Clarion). He also made 46 receptions for 1,019 yards (#2 at Clarion) and 12 touchdowns. He averaged 22.2 yards per catch. In 1965 Tom rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns, had 126 receiving yards and one touchdown, averaged 19.4 yards per punt return and made 3 interceptions on defense. In 1966 he rushed for 237 yards and two touchdowns, had 10 catches for 212 yards and three touchdowns, played defensive back and made one interception, and averaged 16 yards per punt return, including a 65-yard touchdown return against Shippensburg. In 1967 he rushed for 408 yards and 2 touchdowns, caught 30 passes for 681 yards and 8 touchdowns, and averaged 19.2 yards per punt return. The Golden Eagles posted an 18-2 record in his final two seasons and was 28-7-2 over his four years. He also played two years of baseball under Joe Knowles and helped the Golden Eagles win the PSAC baseball title in 1967. A native of Wilkinsburg and a 1964 grad of Westinghouse, Tom resides in DuBois with his wife Beverly and they have two daughters, Karen and Katie. He retired recently after teaching 36 years at the DuBois Elementary and Middle School. He also coached football, softball and track
