Clarion Men’s & Women’s Swimming Coach 1979-2000

William G. “Bill” Miller is synonymous with the Clarion University Swimming Tradition he built from 1978-2000. The men’s swimming head coach at Clarion for 22-years from 1979-2000, Miller put together a resume that is unsurpassed in the PSAC and in the NCAA during that time. Miller’s men had a dual meet record of 154-38 (80%), won 16 PSAC team championships and placed second at PSAC’s six times. The men also finished second at the NCAA D-II Nationals in 1992, were third in 1991, 88 and 84, fourth in 1997, 95 and 83 and fifth in 1989, 86, 85, 82 and 81. Bill also took over the women’s program in 1988 and led the Golden Eagles to a 13-year dual meet record of 90-20 (82%), 12 out of 13 PSAC team titles, and placed in the top 5 at the NCAA Division II Nationals in 11 of those 13 seasons. Top finishes were second in 1993, third in 1998 and 94, 4th in 2000, 1999, 97, 95 and 88 and 5th in 1996, 92 and 91. He was the PSAC Men’s “Coach of the Year” six times (1998, 96, 95, 92, 91, 85) and PSAC Women’s “Coach of the Year” seven times (2000, 97, 95, 94, 93, 92, 91). Bill earned NCAA Division II Men’s “Coach of the Year” honors in 1992. Miller, formerly a member of the NCAA Rules Committee and Chairman for NCAA D-II Swimming, has always been a very well-liked head coach among his peers because of his dedication to the student athletes, his honesty and integrity for the sport of swimming and his always positive approach to life. A native of Butler, Pa., a 1959 graduate of Butler High and a 1964 graduate of Slippery Rock, Miller coached at Seneca Valley (1966-74) and Norwin (1975-77) before coming to Clarion.
