William “Bill” May, possessed a “Golden Toe” for the Golden Eagles and was certainly the top placekicker in the PSAC and the NCAA from 1977-1980. He helped lead Clarion to three PSAC West (1977, 78, 80) and two PSAC (1977, 80) football Crowns during his time at Clarion. May was an All-America kicker all four seasons at Clarion. He was a First Team All-American in 1979, Second Team in 1977 and 1978 and HM All-American in 1980. He was a first team PSAC West, Pgh. Press, Post-Gazette and ECAC throughout his career. In his freshman year (1977) May converted 21 of 22 PAT’s and a PSAC record 15 of 17 field goals, including a 26-yarder with 3-seconds left to lead Clarion to a 25-24 win over Millersville in the PSAC title game. May also made all 33 PAT’s and 5 of 5 field goals in 1978, 18 of 19 point after attempts and 16 of 21 field goals in 1979 and 15 of 17 point after attempts and 13 of 18 field goals in 1980, including the winning points in a 17-14 PSAC title game win over Kutztown. He made an unbelievable 49 of 61 career field goal attempts for an NCAA D-II and PSAC record (80%) conversion rate, and a record 87 of 91 career point after attempts (96%). Clarion had a combined overall record of 35-6-1 during those four seasons. In 1977 he also had the NAIA and NCAA record with five field goals made in a single game, leading Clarion to a 15-12 win over IUP. He played all four seasons under former coach Al Jacks. May held all of the PSAC’s and Clarion’s kicking records when he finished his career. He totaled 234 career kicking points. A native of Wexford, Pa. and a 1977 graduate of North Allegheny High School, May currently resides in Butler, Pa. with wife Karen.
