CLARION GRIDDERS HOST KUTZTOWN SATURDAY

The Golden Eagles posted an exciting 23-20 come from behind victory at Glenville on Saturday and turn their attention to this Saturday's game with a chance to return to a .500 record. Clarion will host Kutztown on Saturday, September 27th at Memorial Stadium with kickoff slated for 6pm.

The game can be heard on WCCR-FM, 92.7 and on the internet at Redzonemedia.com with Mike Kalinowski and Dave Katis describing the action.

EAGLES 1-2 OVERALL/LUKE 49-52 IN 10 YEARS AT CLARION

Clarion enters the game with a 1-2 overall record having defeated Glenville State last Saturday by a 23-20 margin. Prior to that the Golden Eagles dropped a tough 13-10 overtime loss to Millersville, and in the season opener, Clarion lost to East Stroudsburg 31-21. Head coach Malen Luke has a ten year record of 49-52 at Clarion and is in his 16th year overall as a head coach with a record of 86-73. Clarion has won the PSAC-West in 1996 and 2000 under Luke, while the 1996 squad advanced to the NCAA semifinals.

KUTZTOWN 2-1 OVERALL/COACH KEENY IN 6TH SEASON

Kutztown enters the game with a 2-1 season record under sixth year head coach Dave Keeny. The Golden Bears opened the season with an impressive 34-6 win at Virginia State, returned home to defeat Lock Haven 7-3, then lost at Shippensburg last Saturday 35-12. Coach Keeny has a 28-27 overall record at Kutztown.

CLARION LEADS SERIES WITH KUTZTOWN 12-2

Clarion leads the overall series between the two schools by an 12-2 margin dating back to 1941. More recently the Eagles have won four of the last five played from 1998-2002. Last year the Eagles captured a 31-7 win at Kutztown's University Field. In 2001 Clarion captured a 36-7 win at Memorial Stadium, while the Bears downed Clarion 17-14 at Kutztown in 2000. Clarion won 31-21 in 1999 and 23-16 in 1998. The game with the most on the line between the two schools came in 1980 when Clarion downed the Bears 15-14 in the PSAC title game at Clarion.

CLARION OFFENSE ADDING BALANCE

Clarion's offense is seeking to add balance as the season enters the fourth weekend. Overall Clarion is averaging 259.7 yards per game, including 178.3 on the ground and 81.3 through the air. Last week the Eagles passed for 114 yards at Glenville.

Ready to call the signals will be true freshman Felton Woulard who has rushed for a team-leading 185 yards on 60 carries and 2 td's, while also completing 16 of 29 passes for 212 yards and 1 td. He ran for 133 yards against Millersville two weeks ago, and last week completed 8 of 14 passes for 88 yards at Glenville. The backup role will either fall to Brad Reifsnyder or Frantz Charles. Charles started against East Stroudsburg, but missed the last two games with a leg injury. Charles had 84 rushing yards on 22 attempts.

The receiving corps will have Pierre Odom (6 catches, 111 yards, 1 td), Ed Rivers (3 grabs, 25 yards) and Ron Rivage (3 catches, 28 yards) at wideout and John Dominic (3 catches, 43 yards) and Pat Bircher at tight end.

The running game will have Brandon Sweeney (19 carries, 73 yards, 1 td) and Glenn Lovelace (13 runs, 33 yards) at halfback, and Jason Warner (91 yards, 19 carries) and Marcus Lowe (61 yards, 21 rushes) at fullback.

CLARION DEFENSE ANCHORED BY BOWERS & WEATHERSPOON

Clarion's defense has played very well in the early going of 2003. The "D" is giving up 351.7 yards per game including 159.7 rushing and 192 passing.

Up front the Eagles are led by All-America noseguard Troy Bowers who has 19 tackles, 4 qb sacks and 6 tfl's this season. Joining him are tackles Tim Connolly (16 hits, 2 sacks, 3 tfl's), Ben Heisel (8 stops, 2 tfl's), Corey Shaner (1 sack) and Matt Niedbala.

The perimeters are guarded by Jabari Weatherspoon (22 tackles, 1 tfl, 1 int for td) and Colin Brubaker, while the inside linebackers are expected to be Matt Morris (24 stops, 2 tfl's, 3 fumbles recovered) and Brock Luke ( 5 stops), who missed the last two games.

The secondary features Myron Hargon (5 hits, 4 break-ups, 1 sack) and James Charles (10 tackles, 1 int for td) at corners and Bo Busch (26 hits, 1 sack, 2 fumbles caused) and Emil Johnson (15 tackles, 1 int, 2 fumbles caused) at the safeties.

KUTZTOWN OFFENSE GETTING 303 YPG

The Golden Bear offense is averaging 303.3 yards per game including 100.7 on the ground and 202.7 through the air.

Junior signal-caller Jeremy Copeland has clicked on 49 of 96 passes for 601 yards and 5 td's with 8 interceptions.

The top receiving targets will be Mike Conner (15 catches, 163 yards, 3 td's), Trevor Smith (12 grabs, 258 yards) and Dave Borden (11 catches, 92 yards, 1 td) at wide receiver.

The running game will be led by running backs Tony Bria (160 yards, 43 carries) and Stephen Gammage (94 yards, 2 td's, 42 tries).

BEAR DEFENSE LIMITING OPPONENTS TO 272 YARDS

The Golden Bear defense this year is limiting its opponents to 272 yards of total offense, including 151.7 rushing yards and 120.3 passing yards.

Up front the Bears are led by tackles Brent Hudson (9 stops) and Adam Ogorek (1 tfl) and ends Tim Krusen (17 hits, 3 sacks, 7 tfl's) and Matt Sola (14 tackles, 4 tfl's).

The linebacking chores are handled by middle linebacker Greg Mitchell (29 stops, 4 tfl's, 2 fumble recoveries) and outside backers Yusef Turner (15 jolts, 2 tfl's) and Ted Kinyon (11 stops, 3 tfl's).

The secondary has Barren Grier (15 tackles, 1 int) and Andre Davis (11 hits) at the corners and Michael Baldwin (12 stops) and Matt Millard (15 tackles) at the safeties.

CLARION NOTES: In last year's 31-7 win by Clarion over Kutztown, the Eagles rushed for 306 yards on 62 carries ... Adam Almashy rushed for 40 yards and 2 td's, plus threw for another to lead the way ... Robert Walker gained 86 on 20 carries, while Brandon Sweeney had 66 on 12 tries and Frantz Charles added 40 on 6 carries ... Gammage for Kutztown also ran for 85 yards and 1 td on 26 carries ... Kutztown managed 94 rushing yards and 96 passing yards on the game... Clarion returns home again next week to host IUP in the PSAC-West opener on October 4th ... Kickoff is 2pm for a game that will also serve as Homecoming and the ALF Festival Parade...
