General

Alpha Gamma Phi Scholarship
This scholarship established by the brothers of Alpha Gamma Phi fraternity. It is awarded to an incoming freshman student-athlete. Recipient must have a minimum SAT score of 900, be ranked in the upper two-fifths of his/her graduating class, have financial need, and meet the eligibility requirements of the NCAA. Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Alumni Association Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship endowment was created by the Clarion University Alumni Association with proceeds from the annual "Spring for Scholars" auction. These scholarships are available to Clarion University athletes who meet the NCAA eligibility requirements.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Athletic Diversity Scholarship Endowment
Scholarships to assist in achieving compliance with Title IX in the athletic program or other needs as determined by the project director.

Louis & Beatrice Dean Family Athletic Scholarship Endowment
This scholarship was established by Louis, Class of 1974, and Beatrice Dean to demonstrate their desire to support Clarion University student athletes. The scholarship will be available to both men and women who participate in any of Clarion's NCAA sports. Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

George B. Garbarino Scholarship
An endowed scholarship created via proceeds from the university's annual Wild Game dinner along with gifts from friends of Mr. Garbarino. This athletic scholarship administered by the athletic director. Scholarships are available to both men and women who compete on intercollegiate teams at Clarion.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Golden Eagle Scholarship Endowment
Scholarships are available to both men and women who compete on intercollegiate teams at Clarion. Interested students should have their high school coach contact the respective coach at Clarion for additional information. Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year. Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Investing in Futures
Scholarships are available to both men and women who compete on intercollegiate teams at Clarion. Joe Kata, Class of 32, Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship established by Verna Kata, Class of 32, in memory of her husband Joe who was a former three-sport athlete and local high school football coach, as well as a guidance counselor and superintendent. The award will be given to a male or female freshman student athlete who meets eligibility requirements set by the NCAA.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

The Kretzler Family Endowment
This scholarship is established in the name of Lorraine Miller - Kretzler ('42), L. Ken Kretzler ('73 & '74), Karen Lorraine Kretzler - Dinsmore ('79), and Ed Kretzler. The scholarship is to be awarded to a Clarion University junior or senior who has played at least one year prior in one of the following sports: football, women's volleyball, men's basketball, and women's basketball. The student must agree to continue participation in the sport for his/her upcoming year. To be considered, a student athlete must meet all NCAA eligibility requirements, have a cumulative 2.8 GPA or higher, and have demonstrated excellence on the court or field. The award will rotate between the four sports mentioned earlier according to the order they were listed.

Clarence and Janet Lesser Scholarships
The Lesser Trust Fund provides scholarships to successful students in the areas of theatre, art, music, and athletics. High school students who have exhibited high interest and achievement in these areas are urged to apply. Application for consideration needs to be submitted prior to April 1. Selection is based upon talent, academic promise, and leadership potential. Awards may be continued in subsequent years at the discretion of the selection committee, subject to the availability of funds. The Frank Lignelli Family Scholarship
The Frank Lignelli Family Scholarship was established through the Clarion University Foundation, Inc., with tremendous assistance from dedicated friends, peers and athletes who were either teammates of or coached or directed by Frank at some point in his long Clarion University career. Frank Lignelli ('50) dedicated over 30 years of his life to making Golden Eagles athletics one of the top programs in the nation prior to his retirement in 1986.  It is with the spirit of moving PennWest - Clarion athletics further ahead into the future that this scholarship will promote and enhance both the wrestling and football programs.  To be eligible you must be a PennWest - Clarion recruit or team member of the wrestling or football team, must meet the eligibility requirements set by the NCAA, and maintain at least a 2.0 QPA at PennWest - Clarion.

Robert M. McBurney ('71) Athletic Scholarship
This endowment was established through an estate gift from Robert M. McBurney, Clarion State College (CSC) Class of 1971. Bob was an early graduate of CSC's business school and distinguished himself by becoming VP of Finance for Huffman Corporation of Clover, SC. He was a great supporter of athletics and this scholarship will help support Clarion Golden Eagles team athletes. Recipients of the scholarship must be a member on any Clarion Golden Eagles athletics team at the PennWest Clarion campus. Student-athletes must meet NCAA requirements. Selection will be made by the PennWest Clarion Athletic Director.

Potter-McClune Scholarship
This scholarship endowment was established by Mr. Clifford R. McClune and his wife Maralouise, in honor of his parents, Blance Irene Potter and Russell R. McClune; and grandparents. The scholarship was created to support of student athletes from either Clarion County high schools (preference to students from Clarion Area or Clarion-Limestone High School) who demonstrate financial need. (Second preference the remaining Clarion County schools) Recipients are eligible to receive the award in subsequent years, provided that they remain in good academic standing (3.0 or higher).  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Dave Mercinko Memorial Scholarship
Established by Michael, Class of 1979, and Courtney Baker in memory of Dave Mercinko, a former Clarion University football player. This scholarship will be an annual award for a freshman Clarion University student athlete. To be considered one must have a minimum SAT score of 900 or above, graduate in the top two-fifths of high school class, and demonstrate financial need.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Richard Family Scholarship
This scholarship established by Randall '87 and Diana '89 Richard will be awarded to a student-athlete of the wrestling team who demonstrates a continued spirit of excellence in the classroom, in competition and in the community.   This scholarship stems from Randall and Diana's fond memories from their time at Clarion University and the impact family, friends, coaches, faculty and community had upon their lives.  The scholarship recipient will meet the student-athlete eligibility requirements of the NCAA.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those student-athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Roth Family Scholarship Endowment
This scholarship endowment was established by Kevin and Carol Roth in honor of their family, reflecting a deep and lasting connection to Clarion University, a steadfast commitment to education, and a meaningful investment in students. Annual awards shall be for one male and one female student-athlete that meet criteria set forth by the university and the NCAA.

Fran Shope Scholarship
A scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior woman who has made outstanding contributions to Clarion University athletics.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

The Dr. Wendy Snodgrass Family Scholarship
Dr. Wendy J. Snodgrass (Hamilton) is the Director of Intercollegiate Athletes for Clarion. In 2017 she was the first woman to hold the athletic director position at Clarion University and one of four female athletic directors in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). She has been with Clarion since 2005 in roles such as Associate Athletic Director, Senior Woman Administrator, Compliance Coordinator and Title IX Deputy. Wendy and her husband Jeff have twin daughters Callie and Maggie and reside in Clarion. Wendy and her family started this scholarship endowment to assist with the rejuvenation and retention of Clarion University Athletics. 

Annually, one male and one female student-athlete will be selected to receive a scholarship. Students must meet minimum NCAA Division II academic eligibility requirements to be considered.

Take Flight Endowment
This athletic scholarship administered by the athletic director. Scholarships are available to women who compete on intercollegiate teams at Clarion.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those student-athletes in her group of recruits/team members each year.  Recipient must meet the eligibility requirements set by the NCAA. Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Clarion Theta Xi Alumni Association Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was founded by members of the Clarion Theta XI Alumni Association to support the Clarion Golden Eagle Football and Wrestling teams. The Clarion Theta Xi Alumni Association was founded to continue, create, and foster the spirit of Brotherhood. Our goal ls to forge lifelong relationships and friendships and to coordinate activities and initiatives. Two scholarships will be awarded, one to a member of the Clarion Golden Eagle football team, and one to a member of the Clarion Golden Eagle wrestling team as decided by each respective head coach.  Applicants must be a member of the Clarion Golden Eagle Football or Wrestling teams and must be in good academic and disciplinary standing with both Clarion University and NCAA regulations.

W. S. Tippin Scholarships
Scholarships are available to both men and women who compete on intercollegiate teams at Clarion. Interested students should have their high school coach contact the respective coach at Clarion for additional information.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Harry E. Tripp Women's Athletic Endowment
This scholarship was established in honor of Harry E. Tripp to support women's athletics at Clarion University. Candidates must meet all eligibility requirements set by the NCAA. Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Weir Family Scholarship
Established by Chuck Weir, Class of 1956, a former Clarion University athlete, and Shirley Weir, in honor of the Weir family that includes many children and grandchildren, some of who have graduated from Clarion University. This scholarship will be awarded to a freshman student-athlete who meets the eligibility criteria set by NCAA.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Baseball

Ernest W. Johnson Memorial Baseball Scholarship
This scholarship is available to a member of the Clarion University baseball team who is a resident of Pennsylvania. In addition, the individual must have completed at least three academic semesters, be in good academic standing, and be eligible for participation in NCAA events the following year.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

E. James and Patricia Kelley Honors/Athlete Scholarship.
Established by Pat Kelley in loving memory of her husband, James Kelley, Class of 1950, who passed away in 2010.  Jim received his undergraduate degree at Clarion State College where he played both basketball and baseball.  His love of academics and sports led to the creation of this combined scholarship for the Honors Program and Athletics.  Eligibility Requirements:  Honors Program student that either plays basketball or baseball.  The scholarship is awarded by the Director of the Honors Program.  If there is not an eligible student from basketball or baseball, then the award will be presented to any Honors student playing a recognized sport.

Joseph J. Knowles Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship fund was established to assist both a baseball and a football student-athlete each year. Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those student-athletes in his group of recruits/team members each year. Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Basketball (M)

John V. Calipari Scholarship Endowment
This scholarship created by John V. Calipari, Clarion Class of 1982, and supported by his former Clarion teammates. Scholarship will be awarded annually to a Clarion University Men's Basketball player. Athlete must also meet the eligibility requirements set by the NCAA. Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered by the basketball coaching staff.

Kenneth H. Glass Sportsmanship Scholarship
This scholarship was established to honor Clarion alum and former basketball player Kenneth H. Glass. Ken was a member of the United States Marine Corps as Chief Warrant Officer for twenty-six years. Ken has been recognized by his coaches and teammates as an outstanding student-athlete that had a great attitude and showed steadfast self-control, trust, and sportsmanship each and every day. This scholarship is to be awarded to a member of the Clarion Golden Eagles Men's Basketball team that demonstrates the same sportsmanship and dedication to their team as Ken Glass did. The recipient(s) of this scholarship shall be a member of the Clarion Golden Eagle Men's Basketball team who meets all requirements for the NCAA and exemplify the traits and attitudes of good sportsmanship both on and of the court. Preference will be given to student-athletes having a minimum 3.0 GPA. Freshman student-athletes are not eligible for this award. This scholarship is renewable at the discretion of the head men's basketball coach.

The purpose of the award is to assist student-athletes enrolled in the College of Business Administration who meet eligibility requirements for either football or men's basketball.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Basketball (W)

Dr. Helen M. Barton Women's Basketball Endowment
This scholarship established by Mary L. Seifert, Class of 1946, in memory of former physical education teacher Helen Barton. Scholarship is for a female freshman student athlete. First preference is given to a female basketball player. Athlete must also meet the eligibility requirements set by the NCAA. Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Dr. George F. and Twila M. Wollaston Scholarship
This endowed scholarship funded by the Wollastons (George '57 and Twila M. '58) as a means of attracting outstanding young men and women in academics and athletics to Clarion. Two freshman scholarships are awarded each year, one to a member of the men's baseball team and one to a member of the women's basketball team.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Football

Cardamone Family Football Scholarship
Gary Cardamone '88 played football for the Clarion Golden Eagles from 1984-87 and graduated from Clarion with a degree in Economics. Gary credits the coaches, his fellow teammates, professors, and community for laying a foundation of success in life. The Clarion community encouraged him to take both football and academics seriously during his collegiate career. This scholarship was founded by both Gary and his wife Misha and will be awarded to a member of the Clarion Golden Eagles football team that displays the same hard work and determination on the field and in the classroom as Gary, and who demonstrates a relentless pursuit of excellence.

Pete Caristo '55 Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Mr. Pete Caristo, an outstanding athlete, educator, coach and member of his community.  Pete was part of Clarion’s only bowl appearance as the ’52 football team defeated East Carolina in the Lion’s Bowl 13-6.  A four-year letterman in football and three-year letterman in baseball, Pete scored 17 career touchdowns and was captain of the 1954 squad.  The Clarion football teams posted a 24-6-1 record during Pete’s playing career.  He taught for 36 years in the town of Johnsonburg, PA.  Pete is well known and respected in the Johnsonburg community for the career emphasis of valuing educational opportunities, raising funding for worthwhile causes and helping young people.  This endowment will provide an annual scholarship to a freshman Clarion University football player.

"Dare to Dream" Scholarship
Established through the efforts of the Clarion University Alumni Committee, whose mission it is to unite Clarion Football alumni and friends to participate in alumni events for the purpose of preserving our proud football tradition, and generating funds for scholarship assistance to talented undergraduate student athletes. Eligibility standard is a Clarion University football player who meets the NCAA eligibility requirements and selection is at the discretion of the football staff.

Al & Karen Jacks Football Scholarship
This scholarship established to honor Coach Al Jacks and his late wife, Karen, for their unselfish contributions to the football and athletic programs at Clarion for more than twenty years. Candidate must be a Clarion University football player who meets the NCAA eligibility requirements.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

The Jimmy Knowles Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2013 to assist football student-athletes at Clarion University.  The scholarship is a tribute to Jimmy Knowles' life of generosity, love, sense of humor, enthusiasm and pride that he felt for his family, friends and mankind.  The Knowles family has deep Clarion University ties and unsurpassed pride and passion for Clarion University athletics.  By establishing this football endowed scholarship, the Knowles family hopes to carry on Jimmy Knowles' passion and pride.  Each year, the football coach will make the scholarship offer to a deserving scholar athlete in his group of recruits/team members.

Joseph J. Knowles Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship fund was established to assist both a baseball and a football student-athlete each year. Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those student-athletes in his group of recruits/team members each year. Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

James A. "Abby" Mays Scholarship
This scholarship established by Carloyn Mays Axtell in memory of her father, a leader in the development of Clarion County. The purpose of the award is to assist student-athletes enrolled in the College of Business Administration who meet eligibility requirements for either football or men's basketball.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Robert Gary O’Brien `62 Football Scholarship
 The Robert Gary O’Brien ’62 Football Scholarship was established in honor of the late Robert Gary O’Brien. Gary, as he was known, was a 1962 graduate of Clarion State College with a degree in secondary education, with two teaching certifications - one in English and the other in Social Studies. During his time on campus, he was a member of the Golden Eagle football team, a member of the Alpha Gamma Phi fraternity, and served as president of student senate in 1961. This endowed scholarship goes to support a student-athlete who is a member of the Clarion Golden Eagle football program.

Richard L. & Mary Lou Pae Football Scholarship
This scholarship was established by friends, former players, and family in honor of Dick Pae. "Coach Pae" was a member of the Clarion University Health & Physical Education faculty for nearly 30 years and is remembered as a highly regarded teacher, a dedicated coach, a great mentor, and an outstanding influence on Clarion's proud tradition in athletics. Mary Lou, along with Karen Jacks, started the End Zone T-Shirt stand in the late 1970's to provide funds for gifts for graduating seniors. As assistant dean in the College of Business, Mary Lou guided many students toward earning their degrees. The head football coach will award this scholarship to a junior football player who will advance to senior status and has demonstrated excellence on the field and in his studies. Special consideration is given to defensive players majoring in business.

Alex Sandusky  Football Scholarship 
This scholarship was established by Clarion State football great Alex Sandusky '54.  Sandusky played on the first undefeated team in school history and was drafted in 1954 to the legendary Baltimore Colts team where he played for 13 seasons.  Candidates must be a Clarion University Football player who meets the NCAA eligibility requirements.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will be considered when appropriate each year.

Sigma Tau Gamma/Sigma Tau Endowment
This scholarship was established in 2002 by the brothers of Sigma Tau Gamma/Sigma Tau Fraternity. The fraternity promotes academic values with a passion for athletics and has decided to establish this award as a way to give back to the university. Many of its members participated in extracurricular activities whose participation and contributions helped establish the rich tradition that is Clarion Golden Eagles Athletics. To be considered, an individual must be a member of the Clarion Golden Eagle football team that plans to matriculate to or is already established at PennWest Clarion campus. Student-athletes must be in good standing with NCAA and have a GPA of 3.2 or higher to be eligible.

Cross Country / Track & Field

Pat Mooney Cross Country/Track & Field Scholarship
This scholarship was established by friends, former student-athletes, and family of Coach Pat Mooney, a highly regarded member of the Clarion University Coaching Staff for more that 10 years.  Eligibility criteria considered by the current coach is as follows:  a current member of the cross country or track & field team; a member of the team entering their final season of competition in either sport (Junior could be considered if no seniors meet the criteria); a non-athletic scholarship member of the team; and the individual must have contributed over the years to the well being of the team and university.

Golf (M)

Burns and Burns Golf Scholarship
This scholarship established to provide support to outstanding student-athletes participating in the golf program.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Lefevre Family Scholarship Endowment
This scholarship was created by Al Lefevre, Class of 1965 & 1971, and his wife Bonnie (Elizabeth J. Harkness), Class of 1965, in honor of their family and their life-long relationship with Clarion.  Bonnie earned her degree in Elementary Education and has taught kindergarten for 27 years, and is an avid golfer.  Al played quarterback for the Golden Eagles while earning his degree in speech pathology and served as a speech therapist from 1965-1999.  Al also coached 70 different teams (golf, basketball, football, volleyball) at the high school level and returned to Clarion University in 1999 as head golf coach.  His university teams were extraordinarily successful and Al was named PSAC Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2006.  Al lost his battle with brain cancer August 2008.  A Lefevre Family Scholarship award will be presented annually to a member of the Clarion University golf team, as determined by the coach. 

Peffer Scholarship Endowment
This scholarship endowment was created by Ryan Peffer ('03) and Suzanne Schwartz out of gratitude for Clarion University and its athletic department. The Peffer Scholarship will be presented annually to a member of the Clarion University's men's golf team. To be considered, candidates must meet all NCAA eligibility requirements, be a member of the Clarion University's men's golf team or a prospective student-athlete that has signed a letter of intent to join the men's golf team and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2.

Golf (W)

The Hincken-Emigh Family Golf Scholarship
This scholarship is in honor of the Hincken and Emigh families. Donald Hincken, Class of 1933, enjoyed golf later in life. Two generations of the Hincken family followed Donald to Clarion University. The endowment is created to help prospective Clarion students experience the same great college experience that we did. Many lesser sports are not financially supported, and since several family members play golf, this endowment is to be awarded to a woman who enjoys the challenge of golf. To be eligible, students must be in good academic standing and be a member of the women's golf team. Preference will be given to students enrolled in a business or nursing curriculum. Students of any other major are acceptable if there are no eligible business or nursing students. Financial need is not required; however, it is desired that the awardee have some form of financial need.

Soccer

Diane L. Reinhard Soccer Scholarship
Established by Mr. David C. Smith, Class of 1964 to honor Dr. Diane L. Reinhard who was highly regarded as a dedicated university administrator, mentor, and outstanding visionary during her 13 years (1990-2003) as President of Clarion University.  To be considered by the soccer coach, candidates must be a player who meets the eligibility requirement set by NCAA, and first preference will be given to a student from the College of Education & Human Services.

Softball

The Dean James D. Moore Women's Softball Scholarship
This scholarship was established by David C. Smith, Class of 1964, to honor Dean James Moore who was a former dean at Clarion State College. First preference will be given to a student/ softball player pursuing a degree in the College of Education & Human Services. Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Swimming & Diving

Clarion State College Swimming Alumni Scholarship
This scholarship was established by a Clarion State College Swimming Alumnus to honor the men who competed in the 1980’s. This scholarship will be awarded on an annual basis to a Clarion University male swimmer(s). Candidates must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA, and meet the established requirements of the NCAA. Coaches will make the scholarship offer to those student-athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.

Dave and Kim Hrovat Diving Scholarship
This scholarship was established by retired Clarion diving coach Dave Hrovat and his wife Kim Hrovat, a '95 graduate of Clarion and former NCAA champion. Dave was the longest-tenured coach in Clarion history, serving 31 years as the program's diving coach from 1990-2021. During his campaign, the diving program acheived 48 national champions and an astounding 294 All-American finishes. This scholarship will be awarded to a member of the Clarion Golden Eagles swimming & diving program as determined by the program's diving coach.

Pat Kiehl Diving Scholarship
Established by Mr. Pat Kiehl, Clarion Class of 1972. Pat was a member of the first swimming team at Clarion - only two divers in 1968. He was the first captain of the team, Clarion's first national champion, All-American, and MVP. Pat was a former professional high diver and won the Masters National Age Group Diving Championship. Pat came from humble beginnings and diving at Clarion was Pat's ticket out and led to his great success in business. To be considered for the scholarship, candidate must be a Clarion male or female diver. They must also meet the eligibility requirements set by the NCAA. Student athletes will automatically be considered.

William G. Miller Swimming/Diving Scholarship
This scholarship established to honor Bill Miller who was the Head Men's & Women's Swimming and Diving Coach at Clarion University from 1979-2000. After 22 years as the men's swimming coach, he finished with a duel record of 154-38, and after 13 years s the women's swimming coach, he finished with a duel record of 90-20. Eligible candidates must be a member of the Clarion University Swimming/Diving Team and meet the NCAA eligibility requirements.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Mark Nanz Memorial Endowment
Established by Chuck Nanz, the former head swimming coach at Clarion University and father of Mark Nanz. Chuck started the swimming program when the natatorium was first opened in the late 1960's. His team placed second in the conference its first year and was the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Champion the next seven years in a row. The Nanz family lost their beloved son, Mark, three days prior to his 30th birthday in a tragic accident that occurred while he was returning to Pennsylvania for a reunion with former swimming teammates for Clarion. The scholarship is presented each year by the head coach to a male Clarion University swimmer.

Dr. Rebecca Rutt Leas Women's Swimming Scholarship
This scholarship was created by Dr. Rebecca Leas (former coach) and Milissa (Steiner) Bauer '84, a former Clarion swimmer and Clarion University graduate.  Dr. Leas was the head women's swimming coach from 1979-1987, leading Clarion to six Division II national team titles and a second and a third place finish.  Her teams were undefeated in PSAC dual meets and won every PSAC championship for eight straight years.  Clarion defeated many D-1 schools and also competed at the Division I national championships 1982-86 and the 1984 United States Olympic Trials.  During Dr. Lea's tenure, the women also excelled in the classroom. This scholarship is awarded to a woman who demonstrates this continued spirit of excellence both in the water and in the classroom. This scholarship is awarded an undergraduate who meets NCAA Div II regulations and must maintain at least a 2.8 QPA while swimming at Clarion University.

Tennis

P.J. Hilbert Women's Tennis Scholarship
This scholarship was established by P.J. (Magaro) Hilbert, Class of 1977.  She was instrumental in helping to establish the women's tennis program and was a player on the original team.  In 2005, P.J. was recognized by the Clarion University Alumni Association as Distinguished Alumnus for her professional and personal achievements since graduation.  The Clarion University tennis coach will determine the Hilbert Scholarship winner each year.

Dr. Max Nemmer Women's Tennis Scholarship
This scholarship was established by David C. Smith '64 to honor Dr. Max Nemmer who was a respected and admired professor of Mr. Smith while at Clarion State Teachers College. Dr. Nemmer came to Clarion State in the fall of 1960 where he taught English and was an esteemed colleague and admired educator. Eligible candidates must meet admission's requirements for enrollment and plan matriculation to Clarion University and must meet the eligibility requirements set by the NCAA. First preference will be given to a student from the College of Education and Human Services.

Volleyball

Tony Banner Family Scholarship
The Tony Banner Family Scholarship is established by Betty Jo, Andrew and Lindsay ('07) Banner to honor Anthony "Tony" Banner ('81). This scholarship has been created as a tribute to Tony's love and support of athletics, particularly at Clarion University. Tony believed that athletes could learn many lessons in the gym and on the field that directly corresponded to everyday life. He also believed that these lessons could truly improve an individual. Therefore, the Banner family wishes the recipient of the scholarship to exemplify passion, hard work and pride in self and team. To be eligible you must be a Clarion University women's volleyball team member who exemplifies passion, hard work and pride in self and team and meet the minimum GPA requirements (currently 3.2).

Johnny Garneau "Golden Spike" Volleyball Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Chuck, Class of 1972 and Jane, Class of 1973, McLaughlin in honor of Jane's father, Johnny Garneau.  During the time he lived in Clarion, Johnny was renowned for his "Johnny Garneaus" restaurants in the Clarion County community and in Pittsburgh, Youngstown, Cleveland, and southern Florida and was one of the founding fathers of the local Autumn Leaf Festival.  This scholarship also recognized the athletic accomplishments of his grandchildren, Megan, CJ, and Kayley McLaughlin.  Eligibility criteria considered by Clarion's volleyball coach includes an incoming freshman volleyball player; a player who meets the eligibility requirements set by the NCAA; and preference will be given to a business major with a gpa of a 3.2 or above in high school.

Wrestling

Barton/Murdock Scholarship Endowment
Garry Barton and Dale Murdock were members of the Clarion University Wrestling team during the 1968-72 academic years. They were both recipients of financial aid from the university and benefited from the excellent education in both the academic classroom and on the wrestling mats. Garry and Dale would like to reciprocate by establishing an endowment for future academic and athletic endeavors of selected wrestlers at Clarion University. The scholarship will be annually by the Clarion University Head Wrestling Coach. Recipients of this scholarship shall be wrestlers who meet the academic requirements for matriculation to Clarion University as well as those requirements set for by the Head Wrestling Coach.

Shae Bloom Memorial Wrestling Scholarship
 This scholarship was established by Shawn and Missy Bloom in memory of their son Shae Bloom.  Shae wrestled for Clarion University for two seasons, holding a 15-9 overall record during his career before his untimely passing in the spring of 2020 while training for UFC.  This scholarship will be awarded on an annual basis to Clarion Golden Eagle Wrestlers who exhibit integrity, strong work ethic, and good sportsmanship.  Candidates must meet the established requirements of the NCAA.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to those student-athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Eric D. ’80 and Sarah E. (Scott) ’80 Booth Wrestling Scholarship
The Booth Wrestling Scholarship was initiated by Sarah Booth to honor she and her late husband Eric's time at Clarion. Having attended Clarion State College during the late 70's and graduating in 1980, they both had a deep admiration for the wrestling program - Eric as a team leader and Sarah as a devoted fan. With successful careers in business and teaching, Sarah's intention to honor Eric's memory as a humble leader within the wrestling program is fulfilled with this scholarship. Her hope is to have young men that embody Eric's spirit of leadership, humility, and a strong work ethic be recipients of this award. The recipient must be a non-freshman and a member of the Clarion University wrestling team and should exhibit leadership qualities, humility, and strong work ethic.

Cole Family Scholarship
This scholarship is created by Michael '91 and Stephanie (Sherman) Cole '90, both proud graduates of Clarion University.  This scholarship represents their desire to recognize what the Clarion University Athletics program has done for their family.  They would like to help other student-athletes who possess the core values that they learned from their parents, high school coaches and ultimately enhanced and refined by the Clarion University athletics programs.  The scholarship is awarded to a wrestler who demonstrates a continued spirit of excellence on the mat/practice, in the classroom and community.  Candidates must meet the established requirements of the NCAA.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those student/athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Jane France & Chris Allison Wrestling Endowment
Scholarships for qualified members of the Pennsylvania Western University - Clarion campus Wrestling team.  The scholarships are awarded by the head coach.

The Mike ('71) and Kay Hinderliter Wrestling Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded in recognition of Coach Robert Bubb and his wife Marsha for their devotion and support of the wrestling program at Clarion University. Over the better part of 50 years, these two individuals have dedicated the time and energy that has shaped the lives of young men and their futures in conjunction with generating valuable financial support and national recognition for the university. The impact of the Bubbs on wrestlers, coaches, and friends during those years has far exceeded any of the basic fundamentals of the sport itself. Those influences continue to present themselves in loyalty, dedication, respect and generosity that the wrestling alumni and friends have demonstrated through the years. This scholarship is established for the purpose of assisting a member of the Clarion University wrestling program with both his academic and athletic efforts to achieve success both on and off the mat and to carry on the qualities and values learned while at Clarion. A freshman recipient must have a high school grade point average of at least 3.50: a sophomore, junior, or senior recipient must have an overall grade point average at Clarion University of at least 3.20. The recipient must show financial need based on the federal FAFSA form. The scholarship is renewable if all requirements are met.

Kuzemka Family "Leadership" Wrestling Scholarship
This scholarship established by Justin and his father Col. Nick Kuzemka.  Justin is a Clarion University graduate class of '92 and former wrestler for the Golden Eagles.  The scholarship stems from fond memories they both have during Justin's time during some of the wrestling programs most successful years.  It is awarded to a wrestler who demonstrates a continued spirit of excellence on the mat/practice, in the classroom and in the community.  Candidates must meet the established requirements of the NCAA.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those student-athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

The Moffatt Family Wrestling Scholarship
This scholarship was established by James (Jim) and Marilyn (Mim) Moffatt '70 to enhance and promote the Clarion University wrestling program and its student-athletes.  They established the scholarship as a tribute to all the friends they had in the wrestling program during their time at Clarion University.  Candidates must meet the established requirements of the NCAA.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those student-athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.

Phi Sigma Epsilon / Keeping the Legend Alive
The Phi Sigma Epsilon/Keeping the Legend Alive Scholarship was established to help student-athletes on Pennwest Clarion's campus. At a Phi Sig reunion dinner, Brother Larry McElwain decided to help create this shcolarship to honor their time at Clarion. Many years later, with financial donations from many fraternity brothers notably led by Dale Richards and Jerry Marterer, the scholarship was established.  Recipients must be a member of the Clarion Golden Eagles wrestling team.

Mark and Sheryl Riesmeyer Wrestling Scholarship
Mark and Sheryl Riesmeyer have been long-time supporters of the Clarion University wrestling program. Their involvement includes leadership in the Pin Club as well as Sheryl's commitment as the volunteer photographer for the team. They have held integral positions with the Clarion University Open Tournament as well as the annual wrestling golf outing. Sheryl's extra efforts were recognized by the Clarion University Alumni Association with the 2008 Distinguished Volunteer Award and by the wrestling coaches with the 2007/2008 Wrestling Coaches Award as presented at the annual banquet. The scholarship recipient will be a wrestler chosen by the Clarion University wrestling coaches based on academic and athletic performance.

George W. Williams/ Robert Bubb Wrestling Scholarship
This scholarship established by Mrs. Nancy Williams in memory of her husband, the voice of Clarion wrestling for many years. The award is made annually to a member of the university's wrestling team or a graduate student associated with the program. The recipient will be selected based upon the following requirements: academic proficiency, wrestling performance, character, moral standards, and eligibility under NCAA rules.  Coaches will make the scholarship offer to one of those scholar athletes in his/her group of recruits/team members each year.  Prospective student athletes will automatically be considered when appropriate.
