Sherry Comes Up Big To Lead Clarion to Double OT Win Over Bloomsburg

CLARION - Mike Sherry hit two game tying 3-pointers, and Clarion outscored Bloomsburg 7-5 in the second overtime to get a 69-67 win over the Huskies in PSAC Crossover men's basketball action Sunday afternoon at Clarion's Tippin Gym.

Bloomsburg had a chance to tie the game with no time remaining when Nick Jones was fouled just outside the 3-point line. The foul was called on the floor, but Bloomsburg was in the double bonus giving Jones two free throws.

With the crowd on its feet screaming, Jones missed the front end of the two-shot foul ending the game.

Clarion was in double overtime thanks to two clutch 3-pointers from Sherry, a freshman from Pittsburgh and Chartiers Valley High School. Sherry sent the game to overtime when he came off a screen and hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with seven seconds left in regulation tying the contest at 57.

The 6-1 guard then did it again in the first overtime when he hit a 3-pointer from the left corner with a 1:07 left tying the game at 62.

Each team had a chance to win the game at end of periods with Bloomsburg's Nick Jones missing a running jumper at the end of regulation and Clarion's Damon Gross coming up short on close shot at the end of the first overtime.

Clarion then came out in the second extra session and grabbed a 68-64 lead thanks to two Josh Yanke baskets and a Demetrius Graham jumper.

But Buddy Rose nailed a 3-pointer with 57 seconds left cutting the lead to one point.

Clarion nearly took a 4-point lead on a Sherry 3-pointer, but the basket was waved off due to an illegal screen.

Graham then stripped Jones of the ball with 5.6 seconds left, and Graham was fouled. The senior from Detroit hit one of two free throws with Bloomsburg getting the rebound and getting up to Jones, who was fouled.

Bloomsburg was up by five with 2:21 left in the game, but a Damon Gross lay-up was followed by Sherry's game tying three-pointer.

The Huskies then took a 3-point lead in the first overtime before Sherry's three tied it again.

Bloomsburg led by as many as eight in the first half before taking a 30-23 lead into the half.

The Huskies then got the lead up to nine points - 36-27 - early in the second half before Clarion rallied.

Graham scored 16 points and dished out six assists to lead Clarion, while Sherry had 13 points and Yanke nine points.

Jones led Bloomsburg with 18 points and six rebounds, while Adon El had 15 points and 11 boards and Drew Jerry had 10 points.

NOTES - Clarion led just once in regulation - 5-4 ... It was Clarion's first multiple overtime game since an 82-78, two overtime win over IUP over IUP Feb. 2, 2005 ... Clarion returns to action Wednesday at Briarcliffe.
