Clarion Sets School Record with 10 Straight Wins to Start the Season

BANNER ELK, NC - By going 4-0 at the Carolina Challenge over the weekend, the Clarion University women's volleyball team has set the school record for consecutive wins to start a season with 10.

The Golden Eagles (10-0) beat Mars Hill 3-0 - 30-21, 30-26, 30-20 - and Lincoln Memorial 3-0 - 30-17, 30-28, 30-25 - Friday before knocking off Belmont Abbey 3-0 - 30-23, 30-16, 30-25 - and host Lees-McRae 3-0 - 30-22, 30-26, 30-18 - Saturday.

Friday night saw senior Libero Vicky Gentile break the school record for digs in a career. After the weekend, she now has 2,039 bettering the previous mark of 2,000 set by Melanie Bull. Gentile had 61 digs in the four matches.

Then on Saturday, senior outside hitter Christina Steiner become the seventh player in school history to record 1,000 career kills. She now has 1,008 after recording 59 over the weekend. Christina added 55 digs in the four weekend matches.

Sarah Fries also had a solid weekend with 46 kills and 32 digs, while freshman Nicole Andrusz added 31 kills and 11 blocks. Kristi Fiorillo set up the offense with 165 assists while adding 32 digs, and Katie Aurand helped out the defense with 27 digs.

Clarion opens up PSAC-West play Tuesday at Slippery Rock (7 p.m.)
