Late Run Lifts Clarion Past Cheyney

CHEYNEY - The Clarion University men's basketball team used a late 12-4 run to beat Cheyney 63-56 Tuesday afternoon at Cheyney.

The Golden Eagles (5-4), winners of four straight, trailed 49-47 with 6:56 to play but took the lead for good, 51-50, on a free throw by Brent Nelson (Detroit) with 5:36 left. Then, after the teams exchanged three's, Nelson scored a lay-up at the 2:43 mark making it 56-53, and freshman Mike Sherry (Pittsburgh/Chartiers Valley) nailed a 3-pointer at the 1:32 mark giving Clarion a 6-point lead, 59-53.

Cheyney cut the lead to 59-56 with 53 seconds to play, but Demetrius Graham (Detroit) hit four straight free throws in the final 22 seconds to seal the victory.

Ricky Henderson (Detroit) led a balanced Clarion attack with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Sherry added 11 points and two steals. Lonnell Jones (Brooklyn, NY) added nine points, and Josh Yanke (North Canton, Ohio) added seven points.

Edwin Braswell led Cheyney (3-3) with 12 points off the bench, Robbie Simpson chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds and Tyrone Smith had 11 points and five assists.

Clarion led 35-28 at halftime and 40-30 just under five minutes into the second half before Cheyney went on a 15-2 run to take a 45-42 lead with 11:11 to play.

Clarion returns to action Jan. 2 when it hosts SUNY-Brockport.
