Yanke's double-double leads Clarion past West Chester

CLARION - Josh Yanke recorded his second double-double of the season to lead Clarion to a 72-59 win over visiting West Chester Sunday afternoon at Tippin Gym.

Coming off the bench, Yanke had 18 points and 14 rebounds, his second-highest totals in each category this season, while recording his first double-double since the season opener Nov. 16. He added two assists and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line while going 6 of 11 from the field.

Clarion (8-6) led wire-to-wire but needed a game-ending 15-3 run to put West Chester (8-6) away.

The Golden Eagles led by just a points, 57-56, with 3:55 to play after a 6-0 Golden Rams run, but freshman Mike Sherry put a halt to the run when he nailed a 3-pointer from the right corner off an assist from Ricky Henderson at the 3:18 mark. Lonnell Jones and Yanke then followed with lay-ups restoring Clarion's lead to eight with 1:25 left, and the Golden Eagles never led by fewer than seven again hitting 6 of 7 free throws including six in a row in the final minute to seal the win.

Clarion was terrific from the line hitting 17 of 18 in the game, a season-best 94.4 percent.

Sherry added 16 points including four 3-pointers for Clarion, while Henderson had 13 points, seven rebounds, three blocks, two steals and two assists. Jones chipped in with 10 points, three assists and two steals, and 5-foot-5 point guard Demetrius Graham added nine points, six assists and four steals.

Lenwood Greenwood led West Chester with 14 points, Ralph Hegamin had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Kenneth St. George had 13 points.

Both teams start conference play in their next games with Clarion traveling to IUP for a 5:30 p.m. start Wednesday and West Chester hosting Kutztown at 1 p.m. Saturday.

NOTES - Clarion's 94.4 percent from the free-throw line was its best since it shot 100 percent (12 of 12) Jan. 10, 1981 ... Yanke's double-double gives the Golden Eagles eight on the season ... Henderson now has 16 blocked shots in eight games ... Clarion has won 8 of 11 games since starting the year 0-3 ... The Golden Eagles finished PSAC crossover play 4-3 and are now 4-3 at home this season ... Clarion is now 6-0 when leading at halftime (the Golden Eagles held a 38-31 halftime lead).
