INDIANA - IUP used a game-ending 24-12 run to erase a 7-point deficit and get a 61-56 win over Clarion in the PSAC-West men's basketball opener for both clubs Wednesday at IUP's Memorial Field House.
The Golden Eagles (8-7 overall, 0-1 PSAC-West) led 44-37 with 12:40 left after opening the second half with an 20-8 run that erased a 5-point halftime deficit.
But back-to-back three-pointers by IUP (9-6, 1-0) jumped started a 14-2 Crimson Hawk run that opened up a 5-point lead, 51-46, with 4:25 left.
Clarion then fought back tying the game at 54 on a Mike Sherry jumper with 1:15 to play, but IUP retook the lead for good on a layup by Jordan Shaw with 40 seconds left.
The Golden Eagles had a couple of opportunities to close the gap in the end, but couldn't do it.
Sherry led Clarion with 16 points including the first 11 of the game for the Golden Eagles. Off the bench, Josh Yanke added 12 points and Ron Hollis 10.
Gerald Brooks led IUP with 16 points, Sean Christiansen had 12 and Darry Webb 11. Adeniyi Amadou had 14 rebounds for IUP helping the Crimson Hawks outrebounded Clarion 36-24.
Clarion returns to action Saturday at California (5 p.m.).
