CALIFORNIA - Trailing at California by 15 with 8:30 left Clarion tried to rally but come up just short 70-60 to the homestanding Vulcans in PSAC-West play Saturday afternoon at Cal's Hamer Hall.
The Golden Eagles (8-8 overall, 0-2 PSAC-West) were down 57-42 with 8:29 left but closed the gap to three points, 60-57, on a 3-pointer by Josh Yanke with 2:36 to play. Clarion, however, could get no closer as Cal hit 10 straight free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Mike Sherry and Lamar Richburg led the Golden Eagles with 14 and 13 points respectively, while Ricky Henderson added four points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots. Ron Hollis and Damon Gross each chipped in with eight points.
Ron Banks paced Cal (10-4, 1-0) with 19 points, while Theron Colao added 13 including three 3-pointers. The Vulcans were on fire from behind the arc hitting 6 of 9 triples in the game. Jess Brooks chipped in with 11 points for Cal.
Clarion returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Lock Haven in its PSAC-West home opener at 8 p.m.
