Clarion Picks up First PSAC-West Win 69-60 Over Visiting Lock Haven

CLARION - The Clarion University men's basketball team picked up its first win in PSAC-West play while breaking a 2-game losing streak with a 69-60 win over visiting Lock Haven Wednesday night at Tippin Gym.

The Golden Eagles (9-8 overall, 1-2 PSAC-West) broke a 47-all tie with 8:42 to play by ending the game on a 22-13 run that including spurts of 12-4 and 6-0. Ricky Henderson (Detroit) had six of his 14 points during the run, while freshman Mike Sherry (Chartiers Valley) had five of his 13 and Ron Hollis (Cleveland, Ohio) five of his six.

Josh Yanke (N. Canton, Ohio) led Clarion with a double-double (17 points, 10 rebounds), his third double-double of the season, while Lamar Richburg (Queens Village, NY_ added 10 points off the bench. Sherry chipped in with seven boards, two assists and two steals, while Henderson had five rebounds and three assists and Hollis five helpers.

Billy Arre, the leading scorer in the PSAC-West (21.2 ppg) led all scores with 28 points on 10 of 25 shooting (6 of 15 on 3-pointers) for Lock Haven but scored nearly half the Bald Eagles (1-16, 1-2) points. Denny Mortimer added 12 tallies and Elli Hanna 11 off the bench including three 3-pointers.

Clarion, which trailed 27-26 at halftime, started the second half with a 14-6 run to take a 40-33 lead with 13:27 left. But Lock Haven answered with an 11-4 run to tie the game at 47.

The Golden Eagles return to action Saturday when they host Shippensburg at 3 p.m. The game can be heard on WCUC, 91.7 FM, in Clarion and on the internet at www.redzonemedia.com.

NOTES - Clarion broke a 2-game PSAC-West home opener losing streak with the win. Clarion's last win in a PSAC-West home opener was in 2005, 83-57, over Lock Haven. Golden Eagle head coach Ron Righter is now 11-9 all-time at Clarion in PSAC-West openers ... Sherry was the PSAC-West Rookie of the Week last week. It was the third time this season he has earned that award ... The win was the third this season for Clarion when it trailed at halftime. The Golden Eagles are 3-8 this season when trailing at the break but 6-0 when leading at the half.
