EDINBORO HOLDS OFF CLARION 49-30

(EDINBORO, PA.): Clarion had four leads in the first half, then tried to rally in the second half but Edinboro's offense was just too much as the Fighting Scots defeated Clarion 49-30 o Saturday afternoon.

Held at Sox Harrison Stadium and part of PA. Sportsfever's state-wide telecast, Edinboro raised its record to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in the PSAC-West, while Clarion dropped to 0-10 overall and 0-5 in the PSAC-West.

Clarion got a big day from sophomore qb Tyler Huether (Irwin - Penn Trafford) as the Eagle signal-caller completed 22 of 35 passes for 262 yards and 2 td's on the day.

Clarion's opening score was set up by corner back Alex Evans' interception of a Trevor Harris pass on the game's first play at the Boro 40. He returned the pigskin to the EDinboro 30 and the Eagle offense was in business.

Huether hit Herb Carraway for 21-yards to the 9, and after a 3-yard completion to Pierre Odom, tailback Eddie Emmanuel bulled in from 6-yards out and Clarion had a 7-0 lead.

That was just the start of a first quarter that saw 41-points scored between the two teams.

Edinboro's qb Trevor Harris also had a big day completing 33 of 46 aerials for 415 yards and 4 td's.

The Boro drove 68 yards in 6 plays and scored when Harris hit Gary Nolen on a 26-yard td pass. The game was tied at 10:19 of the first.

Clarion drove 56-yards to paydirt on its next possession in only 4 plays. The big play was a 31-yard pass to Carraway which took the ball to the 10 yard line. Clarion used a wide receiver reverse to Alfonso Hoggard who ran outside left end and dove just inside the pylon for the Clarion td. Nick Sipes PAT at 8:43 gave Clarion a 14-7 lead.

Again Edinboro came right back and scored on a 70-yard, 6 play drive. The big play was a 47-yard pass from Harris to Nolan putting the Scots on the Clarion 23. Harris capped the drive with a 1-yard qb sneak for the touchdown to tie the game 14-14 at 6:51 of the first.

Clarion started its next drive at the Edinboro 45 after a kickoff went out of bounds and the Scots were flagged for a personal foul. Huether hit Fred Robinson for 18 yards to the Boro 27. On fourth and 9 at the 26, Huether hit Carraway over the middle for 11 yards and a first down at the Scot 15. On first down Huether fired a strike to Pierre Odom in the endzone for a 15-yard td. Sipes missed the PAT and Clarion led 20-14 at 4:42 of the first.

Edinboro drove 62 yards in 8 plays to take the lead. Tailback Dave Bostic scored on a 3-yard run to cap the drive and Justin Gomes PAT had Edinboro in front for the first time at 21-20 at 1:26 of the first.

Clarion's next possession went 59-yards to the Edinboro 4. But on fourth and 3 the Eagles called on Sipes for a field goal and the sophomore booted a 21-yarder to put the Golden Eagles back in front 23-21 at 11:44 of the second.

Edinboro took the lead for good on its next drive that ended when Harris tossed a 2-yard td pass to Ryan Rybicki with 8:37 left in the second. The PAT gave Edinboro a 28-23 lead.

Edinboro had a big drive late in second quarter to pad its lead. Harris lobbed a 4-yard fade route td pass to Rybick with only 4 seconds left on the clock to put the Scots in front 35-23 before halftime.

Clarion came back again in the third quarter when the Eagles drove 66-yards in 12 plays to score. Tight end John Dominic caught a 10-yard td pass from Huether at 8:56 of the third to bring Clarion to within 35-30.

Edinboro's Dave Bostic scored on a 26-yard run with 3:24 left in the third and the Scots had a 42-30 lead.

Clarion drove to the Edinboro 17, but a sack pushed the ball back to the Scots 26. Sipes came on to try a 43-yard field goal, but Chris Amico got a hand on the kick and the attempt fell short.

Edinboro tacked on its final td at 4:07 of the fourth when Harris hit Denayne Dixon on a 3-yard strike.

Clarion had 344 yards of offense on the day. Huether passed for 262 and rushed for 6 yards on the day, while Odom caught 5 passes for 61 yards and 1 td. Carraway meanwhile had 4 catches for 72 yards and Dominic grabbed 4 for 65.

Eddie Emmanuel rushed only 9 times for 38 yards and 1 td.

Edinboro had 570 yards of offense. Harris had his 415 passing yards, plus ran for 18 and 1 score. Dave Bostic caught 9 passes for 86 yards and rushed 18 times for 113 yards and 2 td's. Rybicki grabbed 5 aerials for 72 yards and 2 scores.

Clarion's defense was led by Quintyn Brazil who had 16 stops, while linebacker Garrett McMullin had 9. Nick Sipes (Curwensville) had 7 stops and Shawn Sopic (Curwensville) had 2 tackles. Clarion Area's Kyle Cathcart posted 8 hits.

Clarion finishes the 2007 season next Saturday at home against Lock Haven. Kickoff is set for 1pm.
