(Binghamton, N.Y.): Clarion University's NCAA Division I wrestling team opened the 2007-08 season with a split at the Binghamton Duals on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles opened with a 40-0 loss to #2 ranked Iowa State, then bounced back with five pins in posting a 37-10 win over Sacred Heart.
"I was very happy with our overall performance on the day," said second year head coach Teague Moore. "We scrapped against Iowa State, who not only has one of the top teams in the country, but had already wrestled several dual meets this season. After getting beat, I thought we showed a lot of character coming right back with seven wins and 5 falls over Sacred Heart. I thought we responded well."
In the match against Iowa State, Sal Lascari (Jr. Gray) lost 9-5 to #14 ranked Nick Gallick in a very competitive match. At 157, Clarion's Travis Uncapher wrestled #11 Cyler Sanderson to the wire before losing 9-6. Uncapher (Fr. Grapeville/Hempfield) posted a takedown with 18-seconds to go to make it 8-6 but could get no closer. Sanderson is the brother of wrestling legend and now Iowa State head coach Cael Sanderson.
Mario Morelli (Sop. DuBois) lost 3-2 to the Cyclones Aron Scott in another close match at 174. Scott posted an early third period escape to post the win. Morelli had a couple near miss takedowns in the third.
At 184 Scott Joseph (So. Export/ Kiski) led 3-1 after two periods, but Chris Pursel rallied for an 8-5 win. Pursel's takedown with 16-seconds left gave him a 6-4 lead that he never relinquished.
In the match against Sacred Heart, the Pioneers won the first two bouts to go ahead 7-0. At 133 Rob LaBrake (So. N. Bennington, Vt.) lost a tough 6-4 overtime decision to Cory Dunn, but after that it was all Golden Eagles.
Clarion posted four straight falls starting with Sal Lascari at 141. He pinned Nick Cavallaro at 4:17, then Hadley Harrison (So. McKean/General McLane) pinned Mike DelViscovo at 1:11 and Clarion was back in the lead 12-7.
Travis Uncapher notched his first collegiate fall at 1:37 over senior Tom Sullivan, then Dave Cox (So. Orlando, Florida) followed with a pin at 30-seconds over Mike Powers and Clarion led 24-7.
Mario Morelli notched a major decision over Jed Giguere 11-2 at 174 and Scott Joseph came back with a 9-3 win over Ricky Eichenlaub at 184 for a 31-7 lead.
After Dixon Jordon lost a decision at 197, freshman heavyweight Roman Hussam (Fr. Lewisburg) pinned senior Chris Cristallo at 3:43 for the 37-10 team win.
Clarion will travel to Troy, N.Y. Saturday (Nov. 24) to compete in the Northeast Duals. Clarion will wrestle four times including matches against Oklahoma State, Lehigh, Virginia and American International.
