Final Stats
(LOCK HAVEN, PA.): Clarion rallied with the final 10 points, including Robert Mamula's 27-yard game winning field goal with 3:30 remaining in the game, as the Golden Eagles defeated Lock Haven 24-21 on Saturday night at Hubert Jack Stadium.
Clarion raised its overall record to 2-6 and 1-4 in the PSAC-West, while Lock Haven dropped to 0-8 overall and 0-5 in the PSAC-West.
Trailing 21-14 late in the third quarter, Clarion drove 69-yards in 10 plays and tied the game on an Eddie Emmanuel 4-yard touchdown run with only 27-seconds left in the third. Emmanuel rushed five times for 39 yards on the drive including the final two carries of 9 and 4 yards.
With 12:01 left in the game Clarion took possession on its own 20 and drove 70-yards in 15 plays and took 8:31 off the clock. Eddie Emmanuel rushed 7 times for 28 yards and Tyler Huether rushed 5 times for 28 yards to spearhead the drive. On third and five from the LH 14, Huether dropped back to pass, couldn't find anyone open, and tucked the ball and ran to the LH 10. Facing a fourth and one at the LH 10, Clarion head coach Jay Foster called on his sophomore placekicker, Robert Mamula, who booted the game-winning 27-yard field goal.
Lock Haven drove down field on its final drive and Brendon Pickle attempted a 44-yard field goal with 45-seconds left but the boot missed to the right and Clarion came away with its second victory of the season.
The game opened with Clarion dominating the first quarter, staking the Golden Eagles to a 14-0 lead.
Clarion took the opening kickoff and raced 72-yards in only sx plays to score. Huether hit tight end Matt Foradora over the middle with a 15-yard touchdown pass and Clarion led 7-0 with 12:22 remaining in the first quarter.
After the Golden Eagle "D" held, Clarion got the ball back at its own 30 yards line and went 70-yards in five plays to score. Alfonso Hoggard had the big play on a 51-yard run from the Clarion 46 to the Lock Haven 3. On the next play Eddie Emmanuel rushed up the middle for the score and the Golden Eagles led 14-0 at 8:25 of the first.
Late in the second quarter Nick Sipes blocked a Lock Haven punt which was recovered in the endzone for an apparent Clarion touchdown, but the Golden Eagles were called for holding on the play which nullified the touchdown. Clarion led 14-0 at halftime.
In the third quarter Lock Haven took the opening kickoff and went 65 yards to score its first points of the game. The touchdown came when backup qb Jason Eby scored on a 3-yard run with 12:15 left in the third to cut Clarion's led to 14-7.
With Clarion driving deep in LG territory on its next possession, Tyler Huether was intercepted by Dean Tortorice at the LH 16 and he returned the pickoff 82-yards to the Clarion 2. On the first play Reggie Mencer dashed two yards off the left side and the Bald Eagles tied the game 14-14 with 8:41 left in the third.
The first play of the Golden Eagles next possession saw Tyler Huether run 25 yards to the LH 48, but the Clarion qb fumbled the pigskin and Lock Haven's Bill Limpert recovered.
With the momentum, Eby capped the drive on a 26-yard touchdown pass to DeMarr Dowell and Lock Haven had a 21-14 lead with 5:31 left in the third.
Clarion tied the game on Emmanuel's 4-yard run late in the third, setting up Mamula's game-winning field goal.
Clarion outgained LH 472 - 188 and claimed the time of possession 37:32 - 21:43, but turnovers nearly proved costly.
Clarion had 253 rushing yards and 219 passing yards. Clarion qb Tyler Huether hit on 19 of 33 passes for 219 yards and 1 td, plus rushed for 94 yards. Eddie Emmanuel rushed for 91 yards on 15 carries.
Seven Clarion receivers grabbed passes from Huether. Alfonso Hoggard caught 5 passes for 28 yards, Jaques Robinson grabbed 4 for 39 yards and Matt Foradora had 3 for 39 and 1 td.
The Clarion defense was led by Shawn Sopic who had 5 tackles and 1 interception. Joe Fox, Ben Maund and John Hackel had 1.5 tfl's.
LH qb Jason Eby hit on 13 of 29 aerials for 146 yards and 1 td. DeMarr Dowell caught 5 for 59 and 1 td.
Clarion travels to IUP next Saturday for a 3:30pm kickoff on PA Sportsfever television.
