#9 CAL DEFEATS CLARION 52-20

(CLARION, PA.): The Golden Eagles were inspired for their Homecoming Game against #9 Cal on Saturday afternoon, wide receiver Jaques Robinson had a career game and Eddie Emmanuel rushed for over 100 yards, but it just wasn't enough as California defeated Clarion 52-20 in a PSAC-Western Division game.

Held at Clarion's Memorial Stadium in front of 6,200 mostly Golden Eagle fans, Cal raised its overall record to 5-1 and 3-0 in the PSAC-Western Division. Clarion dropped to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the West.

Ranked #9 in the latest NCAA Division II Poll, Cal opened the game with a field goal and a 3-0 lead on its first drive when Derek Fiorenza booted a 34-yard field goal at 12:02 of the first quarter.

Clarion came right back and marched down the field to tie the game 3-3. Running back Eddie Emmanuel keyed the drive running 6 times for 45 yards, taking the pigskin to the Cal 19. Robert Mamula came on and booted a 36-yard field goal with 7:39 left in the first to tie the game 3-3.

Cal took the lead for good early in the second quarter when Cory Garver caught a 12-yard td pass from McCabe giving Cal a 10-3 lead with 14:55 left in the second.

Cal scored on its next possession going 54-yards in 5 plays and capped the drive when McCabe hit Chase DeCarlo on a 14-yard td pass giving the Vulcans a 17-3 lead at intermission.

Clarion tried to make a game of it on its first possession of the the third quarter. QB Gino Rometo hit Jaques Robinson for 55-yards to the Cal 8, but the drive stalled and Mamula came on to boot a 25-yard field goal pulling the Eagles to within 17-6 at 12:10 of the third.

Cal responded with a td on its next possession on a 35-yard run from Brandon Lombardy making it 24-6 with 11:09 left in the third.

Daine Williams also scored for Cal on a 5-yard run in the third giving Cal a 31-6 lead and never looked back.

Clarion continued to play hard and scored twice in the fourth quarter. On its first drive Clarion took the bal at its own 27 and drove 63 yards to paydirt. Rometo hit Jaques Robinson four times in the drive on passes of 7, 18, 9 and the final one, 34-yards for a touchdown. Rometo lofted a perfect strike to Robinson in the right dorner of the endzone with 12:10 left to play in the game making the score 38-13 - Cal.

Rometo capped the Clarion scoring scoring with a 1-yard td run with 42-seconds remaining making the final 52-20.

Clarion posted 321 offensive yards in the game including 103 rushing and 218 passing.

Rometo hit on 18 of 29 aerials for 213 yards and 1 td. Robinson, a sophomore from Pittsburgh (Oliver) had a single game high of 9 catches for 152 yards and 1 td.

Eddie Emmanuel rushed for 103 yards on 24 carries. It was the 10th 100+ day in his career.

Clarion's defense was led by Garrett McCMullin who had 7 stops, while Alex Evans had 5 tackles and 1 interception, and Barrington Morrison had 2 tfl's.

Cal had 448 yards of offense including 278 rushing and 170 passing.

McCabe hit on 12 of 17 passes for 164 yards and 2 td's. Marcel Pestano caught 5 for 58.

Lombardy rushed 7 times for 106 yards and 1 td, while Daine Williams had 13 carries for 75 yards and 1 td.

Clarion returns to Memorial Stadium next week to host Slippery Rock at 6pm. Cal returns home to host Lock Haven.
