EAGLES START SEASON WITH WIN

CLARION - The Clarion women's basketball celebrated the start of the 2008-09 season with a 72-60 win over visiting Bowie State on the opening day of the two-day Clarion Classic Saturday evening at Tippin Gym.

Katrina Greer came within two points of a career-high with 29 points, while Bethany Koch pumped in a career-high 17 points to lead the Golden Eagle scorers. Lizzie Suwala added a double-double with 11 points and a career-best 14 rebounds, and Sara Pratt had a career-high 17 rebounds to go along with five points, six assists and five blocked shots. With the five blocks, Pratt moves past Heather Cigich (82 career blocks) into third place all-time in Clarion history with 86 career swats.

The win also gets Clarion's 20th year head coach Gie Parsons within one win of 400 career victories. Parsons is 399-311 in her 28th season as a head coach including 289-238 at Clarion, the winningest coach in school history.

The game was tied at 36 at halftime mainly thanks to 18 first-half points from Greer before Clarion used a 21-8 run at near the start of the second half to build a 13-point lead, 59-46.

Bowie State (0-1) fought back closing the gap to five points a couple of times the last with 4:52 to play on a Lakisha Walker layup.

But the Golden Eagles answered the bell closing the game on an 8-1 run Suwala hitting two key baskets including a layup 28 seconds after Walker's layup.

NOTES - Greer's 29 points moved her within two points of the Top 10 in school history. She currently has 1,044 points. Leatha Dudeck is 10th at Clarion in scoring at 1,046. Greer is also within shouting distance of Cheryl Bansek's ninth-place standing (1,049) and Kim Beanner's eight-place spot (1,054) ... In the opening game of the Clarion Classic, Edinboro defeated Alderson-Broaddus 88-80 ... The Classic continues Sunday with Edinboro taking on Bowie State at 4 p.m. and Clarion squaring off with Alderson-Broaddus at 6 p.m. Admission to both games is free, although fans are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for a food drive.
