CLARION - Fairmont State used hot shooting and strong rebounding to get an 87-70 win and spoil the Clarion University men's basketball teams' home opener Wednesday at Tippin Gym.
The Falcons (4-0) shot 53.4 percent (31 of 58) from the field and 57.7 percent (15 of 26) from three-point range while outrebounding Clarion 33-26.
Damon Gross had a double-double for the Golden Eagles (2-2) with 14 points and 10 rebounds on 6 of 8 shooting, and Mike Sherry also had 14 points for Clarion. But it wasn't enough to overcome the three-some of Steve Custis (20 points), Michael Lopez (19 points) and Thad McFadden (25 points) who combined to hit 13 three-pointers including five apiece by McFadden and Lopez.
Marcus Robinson (11 points) and Paul McQueen (10 points, 7 rebounds) also reached double figures for Clarion.
Clarion returns to action Dec. 3 when it hosts Lake Erie College at 7 p.m.
