(CLARION, PA.): Clarion jumped out to a 19-6 lead after 8 bouts and went on to defeat Pitt-Johnstown 19-12 in college wrestling on Saturday night.
Held at Clarion's Waldo S. Tippin Gym, the Golden Eagles raised their dual meet record to 3-4, while Pitt-Johnstown dropped to 2-1.
Clarion winners included #19 ranked Jay Ivanco at 125, Sal Lascari at 141, Chris Lascari at 149, #17 ranked Hadley Harrison at 157 Scott Joseph at 174 and Clint Podish at 184.
Ivanco staked Clarion to a 3-0 lead when he defeated Scott Morgan 7-1 at 125-pounds. Jay had a takedown in the second and two more in the third to get the win.
With the team score tied 3-3, Sal Lascari rallied to defeat Adam Whetstone 4-3 at 141-pounds. Trailing 3-1 in the third, Lascari escaped to make it 3-2, then worked a takedown with about 40-seconds remaining. He rode Whetsone out to win 4-3 and give Clarion the lead for good at 6-3.
Chris Lascari then posted a 9-5 win over Nathan Link at 149. Three takedowns and 2:27 riding time helped him to the win.
Clarion's #17 ranked Hadley Harrison followed with an 8-2 win at 157-pounds over Mazen Kholi to put the Eagles ahead 12-3. Trailing 2-1 in the first, Harrison scored a first period takedown for a 3-2 lead. An escape and takedown in the second put Harrison ahead 6-2, then he rode Kholi out in the third to win 8-2.
At 174 Clarion's Scott Joseph registered a 13-5 major decision over Steve Makin to put the Eagles in front 16-6. Two first period takedowns had Joseph in front 4-1. A second period takedown, and three, third period takedowns gave him the major decision. His final takedown came with only 2 seconds remaining in the bout.
Clint Podish clinched the win for Clarion with his 6-3 decision over Damian Majocha. Podish had a takedown and an escape in the first to lead 3-2. A second period reversal and a dominating ride in the gave him a 6-3 win. He had 3:24 riding time in his match and gave Clarion an insurmountable 19-6 lead after 184.
In the final match of the night, Roman Husam lost a close 5-4 decision to Chris Dempsey. Husam had a takedown at the end of the first to lead 2-0. An escape in the second made it 3-0, but Dempsey rallied with two takedowns of his own to tie the match 4-4 after two. Dempsey escaped in the third, and fought off a couple near takedowns by Husam in the final 20-sconds to win.
CLARION NOTES: Clarion will be off for the Holidays... The next dual action is set for January 9-10 at the Virginia Duals ... Jay Ivanco is now 7-3 at 125, Hadley Harrison 8-3 at 157... Clint Podish is 10-7 at 184, Luckett 10-4 at 197 and Joseph 7-4 at 174... Pitt-Johnstown was ranked 39 in Division II ... Clarion had not defeated UPJ since a 16-15 win in 2004.... Clarion lost earlier in the day to #20 Northwestern 29-3 at North Allegheny High School.
