CLARION - Freshman Mike Sherry scored 25 points, including 15 in a span of less than four minutes in the second half, to lead the Clarion University men's basketball team to a key 75-58 win over visiting IUP Wednesday night at Tippin Gym.
Clarion (12-10 overall, 4-4 PSAC-West), which closed to within a ½ game of third-place IUP in the PSAC-West race, led by just four, 32-28, a little less than three minutes into the second half when Sherry went off hitting five three-pointers in the next 3:39 to help Clarion go on a 17-6 run to take a 49-36 lead with 13:35 left in the game. Sherry hit his first long-range bomb of the span at 17:14 and his last at the 13:35 mark.
After Sherry's explosion, Clarion never led by less than 11 the rest of the game, and, in fact, got the lead up to 19, 57-38, on a Ricky Henderson slam dunk with 9:55 left and again on a Lonnell Jones three-pointer with 7:50 to play.
Josh Yanke added 15 points and six rebounds off the bench for Clarion, while Jones and Demetrius Graham each had eight points with Jones adding eight assists and Graham five helpers and three steals. Henderson added seven points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots, and Damon Gross had seven points and six boards.
Freshman Darryl Webb led IUP (12-10, 4-3) with 22 points and eight rebounds, while Gerald Brooks added 18 points and seven rebounds.
Clarion led by as many as 13, 25-12, midway through the first half before IUP closed to within five, 30-25, at halftime.
Clarion returns to action at 3 p.m. Saturday at Shippensburg.
