(Mechanicsburg, Pa.): Clarion's Kaitlyn Johnson (Fr. Uniontown) won the 100 yard butterfly on Saturday night and the Golden Eagle women remained in second place as a team at the 33rd Annual PSAC Women's Swimming Championships.
Held at Cumberland Valley High School, West Chester remained in first place with 472 points, while Clarion is in second place with 369.5 points and IUP is in third with 288. The thirteen team field shows Edinboro in fourth with 275, Shippensburg fifth with 225, Bloomsburg sixth with 224, Kutztown seventh with 220, Califonia eighth at 170, Lock Haven ninth with 81, Millersville tenth with 77.5, East Stroudsburg eleventh with 66, Slippery Rock twelfth at 65 and Mansfield thirteenth with 24 points.
Johnson won the 100 buttterfly with a time of 57.55 and teammate Carissa Wetzel (Fr. Allentown) was 7th (1:00.48).
Freshman Kelly Connolly (Cranberry Twp.) was second in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:06.19), Denise Simens (Jr. Hollister, Ca.) was 4th (1:07.04) and Sari Cattoni (Sr. Lewis Run) was 11th (1:09.82).
In the 100 backstroke, senior Lori Leitzinger (State College) finished third with a time of 59.02, Gina Mattucci (Fr. Jeannette) finished 6th (1:00.94) and Mary Kaveney (Jr. Erie) was 15th (1:03.57).
In relay events, the 200 medley relay team of Leitzinger, Simens, Wetzel and Mattucci finished second with a time of 1:24.11. The 800 free relay squad of Johnson, Connolly, Cattoni and Leitzinger were 6th with a time of 7:55.45.
West Chester is the defending champion and Clarion won the title in 2006. Clarion has won 26 of the 32 decided championships. Sunday night is the final day of competition and will feature 6 finals events.
