CLARION USES BALANCED EFFORT TO BEAT SLIPPERY ROCK

CLARION - The Clarion University men's basketball team used a balanced effort with five players scoring in double figures to win a key midseason PSAC-West contest 76-63 over Slippery Rock Wednesday night at Tippin Gym.

The Golden Eagles (11-9 overall, 3-3 PSAC-West) were led by Lonnell Jones' 14 points, four steals, while Ricky Henderson had 13 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots. Mike Sherry chipped in with 12 points and four assists, Josh Yanke had 12 points off the bench, and Demetrius Graham added 11 points, three assists and two steals.

Darnell Johnson led Slippery Rock (4-16, 2-4) with 16 points, while Erroll Robinson added 15 and Cory Somerville 10 points and nine rebounds.

Clarion used a 12-1 run midway through the first half to grab an 11-point lead, 31-20, with 5:35 left in the half before Slippery Rock cut the deficit to six, 35-29, at halftime.

The Golden Eagles, though, used a a7-0 run between the 15:13 mark and the 12:11 mark of the second half to build the lead into double digits and never led by fewer than 11 points the rest of the way.

Clarion shot a season-best 62.5 percent (30 of 48) from the floor and was 12 of 15 (80 percent) from the free-throw line.

The Golden Eagles return to action Saturday when they host California at 7:30 p.m. The game is Clarion's "Take a Kid to the Game" night with all kids 14 and under getting in free.
