ERIE - The Clarion University baseball team was swept in a doubleheader at Mercyhurst Monday.

The Golden Eagles (6-2) dropped Game One 9-7 and Game Two 4-0 to the homestanding Lakers (12-7).  

GAME 1 - Mercyhurst 9, Clarion 7

In the first game, the Golden Eagles trailed 9-3 entering the seventh inning but rallied for four runs in the frame and twice had the tying run at the plate but came up just short.

Matt Rossi had the big blow in the seventh for the Golden Eagles hitting a one-out, three-run homerun that pulled Clarion within two. Sam Russell followed that homer by drawing a walk with George Kovac pinch running. But Jay Krimsky struck out, and Kirk Hays flew out to center to end the game.

Mercyhurst used a 3-run second inning to build a 4-0 lead, and then added two more in the fourth and three in the fifth to grab the 7-3 advantage.

Jake Yackovich led Clarion's offense going 3-for-4 including a two-run homer in the fifth. He had three RBIs and also scored three runs. Hays added a pair of hits for the Golden Eagles.

Paul Baker took the loss for Clarion going three-plus innings and allowing six runs, three of them earned, on four hits, three walks and a hit batter. He struck out one while also throwing four wild pitches. Nate Semovoski went two innings and allowed three runs, none of them earned, on two hits and a walk. Jonathan Giuliani went one scoreless inning.

Clarion was hurt by three errors in the game including two by catcher Matt White.

Craig Denman led Mercyhurst with a pair of hits and an RBI, while Joseph Furner scored three runs and Jonathan Keppler and Adam Schlessel each scored twice.

GAME TWO - Mercyhurst 4, Clarion 0

John Iborg threw a three-hitter and Adam Gray had two hits and two RBI's to help Mercyhurst to a 4-0 win in Game Two.

Eric Panko took the loss for Clarion going five innings and allowing four runs, two of them earned, on five hits and four walks while striking out three. Nicholas LaManna finished off for Clarion going one inning and not allowing a hit.

Adam Foltz, Andrew Petruska and Jason Krimsky each had singles for Clarion.

Mercyhurst scored twice in the third and twice more in the fifth to account for its four runs.

Clarion returns to action Tuesday at Bucknell.
