WASHINGTON - The California Vulcans used a combination of good hitting in Game One and solid pitching in Game Two to sweep a doubleheader from the visiting Clarion Golden Eagles Friday at CONSOL Energy Park in
Washington.
Cal (20-10 overall, 7-3 PSAC-West) won Game One 13-7 and Game Two 6-2 to drop Clarion to 7-16
overall and 1-9 in the PSAC-West. The two teams are slated to continue their four-game series Saturday with a
doubleheader at Clarion starting at 1 p.m.
GAME ONE - Cal 13, Clarion 7
California sent 17 batters to the plate in a 12-run fifth inning to beat Clarion 13-7 in Game One.
The Golden Eagles led 4-1 going to the fifth, but Cal used a combination of walks, stolen bases and timely hits to pound
out the 12 runs against four different Clarion pitchers.
Clarion tried to rally scoring three times in the top of the sixth, but that was as close as it got.
Jason Krimsky paced the offense going 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Jordan Premick and Matt Rossi
each hit home runs. Premick was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Rossi was 2-for-3 with two runs scored
and two RBIs. Adam Foltz added a double and a run scored for Clarion.
Eric Panko took the loss going 4 1/3 innings and allowing six runs on six hits and six walks. Kirk
Hays pitched to two batters walking both with the bases loaded in the fifth. Nate Semovoski relieved and faced seven
batter allowing six hits and a walk. He was charged with five runs in zero innings of work. Finally freshman Tyler Ross
came in and got the final two outs of the fifth inning and then pitched a scoreless sixth. He struck out two.
GAME TWO - Cal 6, Clarion 2
In Game Two, Cal's Jay Mitaly and Robert Hedrick combined to two-hit the Golden Eagles in a 6-2
win.
Clarion actually took a 1-0 lead with run in the top of the fifth, but Cal answered with four in the
bottom of the inning and two more in the sixth to go ahead 6-1. Clarion tried rallying in the seventh scoring an unearned
run against Hedrick, but that was all it could get.
Doug Brown and Hays had the hits for Clarion with Brown and Jake Yackovich scoring the runs and Hays
getting the Golden Eagles' lone RBI.
Robert Pollum took the loss going six innings and allowing six runs, five earned, on 11 hits and a
walk while striking out nine.
