CLARION - The Clarion University softball teams were swept in a doubleheader by Edinboro Tuesday afternoon at Memorial Field.
In Game One, the Golden Eagles lost 8-0, and in Game Two Edinboro needed a come-from-behind rally to beat Clarion 3-2.
In the second game, the Golden Eagles had the tying run at second base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning but came up just short.
In the game, Clarion took a 2-1 lead after three innings thanks to a two-run third inning.
In the third, Lauren Martino led off with a single and took second when Kara Kelosky reached on a fielder's choice and went to third on the play when the Edinboro catcher committed an error. Kelosky then stole second before Nicole Lollo brought home the tying run with a sacrifice fly to left. On the play, Kelosky took third. Carlie Cook then doubled Kelosky home giving the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead.
Edinboro tied the game in the fifth inning with an unearned run thanks to a pair of Clarion errors. The Fighting Scots then took the lead with a run in the sixth.
Martino was 2-for-4 with a run scored in the game, while Cook was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Valorie Rankin took the loss despite pitching well. In seven innings of work, she allowed five hits and three runs, just two earned. She hit one batter but didn't walk a batter, and she had two strikeouts.
In the first game, Edinboro used a four-run fifth inning to break open a close game on its way to the 8-0 victory.
Clarion's offense had just two hits but both of them were doubles. Kelosky and Suzie DeNillo had the two baggers for the Golden Eagles.
Caitlin Lamison took the loss going five innings and allowing seven runs, all earned, on 10 hits and two walks while striking out one. Lindsay Vevers finished off going two innings and allowing one unearned run on four hits and a walk while striking out three.
With the losses, Clarion falls to 3-20 overall and 0-12 in the PSAC-West. The Golden Eagles return to action Friday when they host California in a PSAC-West doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m.
