CLARION - The Clarion University softball team was swept in a doubleheader by visiting Gannon Tuesday afternoon losing by scores of 10-3 and 16-8 in six innings.
In Game One, the game was tied at 2-2 going to the sixth, but Gannon scored five times in the sixth and three more in the seventh to pull away.
Nicole Lollo led Clarion (3-26) going 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and two runs scored. Suzie DeNillo was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Carlie Cook from Brookville was 2-for-4 with a double. Caitlin Lamison was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Lamison took the loss going six innings and allowing seven runs, six earned, on 14 hits and two walks while striking out one. Valorie Rankin pitched one inning allowing three unearned runs on three hits.
Game Two turned into a slugfest.
Gannon scored four times in the first before Clarion answered with two in the bottom of the inning. The Knights then added one in the second and seven in the third to take a commanding 12-2 lead. But the Golden Eagles answered back with five of their own in the bottom of the third with Cook driving home two with a single.
But Gannon scored twice in the fourth and twice more in the sixth, while Clarion got one in the fifth.
Cook led the offense going 2-for-3 with another double, a run scored and three RBIs. Lollo was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, and Lauren Martino was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Lamison added a base hit and an RBI.
Lindsay Vevers took the loss going 2/3 of an innings and allowing four earned runs on three hits and a walk. She hit a batter and struck out one. Rankin went two innings allowing eight runs, four earned, on five hits and three walks. Lamison went the final 3 1/3 allowing four runs, one earned, on two hits and a walk.
Both teams committed six errors in the game.
Clarion returns to action Thursday when it plays Bowie State in a doubleheader at Slippery Rock starting at 10 a.m. The Golden Eagles then close out home play with a doubleheader vs. Slippery Rock Friday starting at 2:30 p.m. before ending the season with a double dip at Edinboro Saturday.
