CLARION BASEBALL SWEPT IN FINAL PSAC-WEST DOUBLEHEADER

CLARION - The Clarion University baseball team was swept by Slippery Rock in the final PSAC-West doubleheader of the season for both teams Saturday at Clarion.

Slippery Rock used a four-run first inning to win Game One 7-1 before using a six-run first and an 11-run seventh to get a 23-7 win in Game Two. The victories allowed Slippery Rock to claim the final PSAC-West playoff berth.

In Game One, Clarion was down 4-0 before coming to bat, as Slippery Rock scored four times on three hits and two walks off of Clarion starter and loser Jake Yale, who lasted just one inning.

Nate Semovoski came on and went five innings of relief allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits and a walk while striking out one. Jordan Premick went one scoreless inning of relief.

Clarion scored its lone run in the bottom of the first.

Adam Foltz led the Golden Eagles offense going 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Premick was 2-for-3 and had a sacrifice bunt. Jake Yackovich had the lone RBI.

The game was delayed over an hour because of lighting and rain.

In the second game, Clarion was down 6-0 before it came to the plate and 9-1 at the end of 1 ½ innings. But the Golden Eagles got back in the game by scoring five in the bottom of the second to make it 9-6. But The Rock answered with two in the third and one in the sixth before Clarion scored once in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 12-7.

But Slippery Rock put the game away with the 11-spot in the seventh.

John Hynes took the loss going four innings and allowing 11 runs, eight earned, on nine hits and four walks while striking out two. Paul Baker went two innings and allowed seven earned runs on six hits and two walks. Matt White then pitched a 1/3 of an inning allowing five earned runs on three hits and three walks before Jonathan Giuliani got the final two outs while allowing a hit. He struck out one.

Doug Brown led the offense going 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Premick was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Matt Rossi was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

The losses drop Clarion to 12-24 on the season. The Golden Eagles end PSAC-West play 4-16. Clarion returns to action Monday at Mt. Aloysius.
