SHIPPENSBURG - The Clarion University baseball team was swept in a PSAC-West doubleheader at Shippensburg Saturday losing 12-0 and 14-2.
With the losses, the Golden Eagles fall to 7-9 overall and 1-5 in the PSAC-West. They return to action at 1 p.m. Sunday when they host Shippensburg in a PSAC-West doubleheader.
GAME ONE - Shippensburg 12, Clarion 0
Matt Wright was nearly perfect in Game One for Shippensburg allowing just one base runner, a two-out double in the sixth inning by Jordan Premick, while striking out 13 and walking no one in six innings of work. Kody Kibler finished up for the Red Raiders going one inning and striking out the side.
Shippensburg, meanwhile, scored seven runs in the first two innings and led 10-0 after four. Clarion starter Gregg Bandzuh lasted just 3-plus innings allowing 10 runs, eight of them earned, on 10 hits, a walk and a hit batter while striking out three. Jake Yale, making his season debut, went two innings and allowed no runs, on one hit and three walks while striking out one. George Kovac finished up going one inning and allowing two runs, both earned, on two hits and a walk while striking out one.
Tyler Redick was the big bat for Shippensburg going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBIs. He hit a two-run home run in the fourth that chased Bandzuh. Shippensburg collected 13 hits in all.
GAME TWO - Shippensburg 14, Clarion 2
Shippensburg's bats continued to shine in Game Two with the Red Raiders knocking out 17 hits and 14 more runs including a trio of four-run innings.
Shippensburg led 2-0 at the end of the first inning before Clarion scratched out solo runs in the second and third to tie the game. But the Red Raiders exploded for four runs in the bottom of the third to retake the lead and then added four in the fifth and four more in the sixth.
Eric Panko took the loss for Clarion going 4 2/3 innings and allowing 10 runs, all earned, on 11 hits and three walks while striking out three. Paul Baker finished up going 1 1/3 innings and allowing four earned runs on six hits and two walks.
Tim Freshour got the win for Shippensburg going seven innings and allowing two runs, only one earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out three.
Matt White was 2-for-3 with a run scored for Clarion, while Matt Rossi was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Cedric Johnson was 1-for-1 with a sacrifice fly and an RBI.
Kasey Kuhns was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs for Shippensburg, while Rick Shumway was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs. He had a triple, one of two extra base hits by Shippensburg.
