(Mansfield, Pa.): Clarion's baseball team traveled to Mansfield on Monday to tangle with the talented Mounties at Shaute Field. Mansfield rallied in the bottom of the seventh in game one to defeat the Golden Eagles 6-5, and then defeated Clarion in the nightcap 14-6.
Clarion dropped to 7-13 overall, while Mansfield raised its record to 23-10.
In game one with the score tied 1-1 in the second, Clarion took a 3-1 lead when Andy Petruska hammered a two-out, two-run homer. Doug Brown followed with a solo shot and the Eagles led 4-1 at the end of the second.
Mansfield scored three runs in the third to tie the game on a three-run homer by Chris Miller.
The Golden Eagles took a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh when Jason Krimsky singled, was sacrificed to second, and scored the go-ahead run on an rbi single by Kirk Hays.
Mansfield rallied to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win 6-5. The game-winner came on a sacrifice fly by Drew Blair that scored Chris Miller with one out.
Nate Semovoski pitched into the seventh and took the loss, giving up 11 hits and all 6 runs. Kirk Hays came on with two on and none out in the seventh and pitched .2 innings.
Petruska and Hays had two hits each for the Golden Eagles who had 10 as a team.
Game two also saw Clarion have a couple of leads early that the Eagles couldn't hold. Clarion led 1-0 in the first as Jordan Premick singled, stole second and later came home on a ground out from Doug Brown.
After Mansfield tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first, Clarion responded with two in the top of the second. With Chad White and third and Jordan Premick at first and two outs, the Eagles used a double steal to get their first run of the inning. Andrew Petruska singled home Premick and Clarion led 3-1.
But Mansfield answered with 2 in the second to tie the game 3-3, then added 6 in the third and 4 in the fourth to lead 13-3.
Clarion added three runs in the sixth on an rbi single from Jordan Premick, Travis Rhoads took home on another Eagle double steal, and Doug Brown had an rbi single.
Nicholas LaManna started and took the loss. He went 2.1 innings and allowed 8 runs, with 6 earned, walked three and struck out two. Jonathan Giuliani went 1 inning, Paul Baker 1.2 innings and Matt White 1 inning to close the game.
Clarion hosts Allegheny at 3:30pm for one, nine-inning game at Memorial Stadium on Wednesday.
