Final Stats
(CLARION, PA.): East Stroudsburg quarterback Tim Roken passed for 5 td's and 420 yards, plus ran for one td as the Warriors defeated Clarion on Saturday 49-28.
Held at Clarion's Memorial Stadium in a steady rain, the Family Day crowd watched East Stroudsburg boost its overall record to 3-0 while Clarion dropped to 1-2.
The game itself featured 918 yards of total offense, including 460 by Clarion and 458 for East Stroudsburg. The Warriors made the big plays early in the first half and opened a 35-7 lead by halftime.
ESU opened the scoring on an Ed Kiser 7 yard pass from Tom Roken at 13:15 of the first quarter. The Warriors went 72-yards in only 5 plays.
Clarion came right back and drove 86 yards in 13 plays to tie the game. The longest play was an 18-yard pass from Gino Rometo to Matt Foradora, which put the pigskin at the ESU 23. Eddie Emmanuel, who carried 4 times for 30 yards in the drive, took the ball to the four yard line, where Golden Eagle wide receiver Tyler Huether took a direct snap and ran off left end 4 yards for the touchdown at 7:16 of the first. Robert Mamula's PAT tied the game 7-7.
ESU took the lead for good when the Warriors 64-yards in only 3 plays to paydirt. Tim Roken tossed a 34-yard td pass to Doug Ogden and the Warriors led 14-7 at 6:28 of the first.
Clarion's Emmanuel fumbled and ESU recovered on the Eagles 33. Three plays later Roken hit Jeff Giglio for a 14-yard td pass and ESU led 21-7.
Roken hit Sam Shuman later in the second with a 34-yard td pass, then scored on a 3-yard run to give ESU a 35-7 halftime lead.
Clarion's offense had a very good day as sophomore qb Gino Rometo tossed an 8-yard td pass to Matt Foradora in the third quarter, and scored on a 1-yard run late in the fourth to bring the Eagles to within 49-28.
Rometo completed 22 of 35 passes for 238 yards and 1 td grabbed 7 passes for 132 yards. Jaques Robinson caught 7 passes for 94 yards and Matt Foradora grabbed 7 passes for 60 yards.
The Golden Eagles also had two, 100+ yard rushers on the day. Nick Sipes carried 17 times for 118 yards and 1 td, while Eddie Emmanuel rushed 21 times for 105 yards. For Emmanuel it was his 9th career 100-yard day at Clarion and now gives him 1,927 career rushing yards, placing him 8th all-time at Clarion.
Clarion had 222 rushing yards and 238 passing yards.
Clarion's defense was led by Alex Evans who had 12 tackles, Shawn Sopic who made 11 tackles, posted 1 interception and 2 broken-up passes. Jimmy Simmons had 3 tfl's to run his season total to 14.
East Stroudsburg's Tim Roken completed 24 of 33 passes for 420 yards and 5 td's. He hit Sam Shuman for 9 aerials for 141 yards and 2 td's, and Drew Stem grabbed 7 passes for 132 yards.
Clarion travels to Mercyhurst next week for a 1pm start, while ESU hosts Shippensburg at 4pm next Saturday.
Clarion's 1983 PSAC Championship team was honored at halftime of the game. 1983 head coach Gene Sobolewski, members of his coaching staff, and about 35 former players returned to Memorial Stadium to be honored. That Clarion team was 9-2 overall, ranked third in the nation during the season, and ironically defeated East Stroudsburg in the "State Game" 27-14. The 1983 state championship game was held in Hershey.
