MERCYHURST HANDS CLARION 41-7 DEFEAT

(Erie, PA.): Mercyhurst qb Garrett Kensy passed for 3 td's and running back Ben Jennings rushed for 137 yards and 1 td as the Lakers defeated Clarion 41-7 on Saturday afternoon in the PSAC-West opener for both schools.

Played at Mercyhurst's Tullio Field, the Lakers move to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC-West, while Clarion drops to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the PSAC-West.

Mercyhurst scored on its opening drive of the game going 51yards in only there plays. The td was scored by Ben Jennings on a 31-yard run at 11:05 of the first quarter.

Clarion took the ensuing kickoff and moved from its own 49 to the Mercyhurst 36, but running back Eddie Emmanuel fumbled the ball at the Laker 32 and MC's Adam Brown recovered ending the Eagle scoring threat.

The game remained 7-0 Lakers until late in the second quarter when the Lakers broke the game open. First it was Kensy hitting Davew Stallard on an 8-yard scoring pass with only 4:04 remaining before intermission. The PAT was blocked by Clarion's Ben Maund, but the Lakers led 13-0.

Mercyhurst got the ball back at its own 20, and on second down Richard Stokes broke several tackles, reversed his field and ran 36-yards to the Clarion 41. The Lakers capped the drive with a 20-yard td pass from Kensy to Kirk Campbell and Mercyhurst led 20-0 at halftime.

Kensy threw his third td pass, a 4-yard strike to Josh Szeluga at 11:29 of the third and the Lakers were on their way to their second win of the year.

Clarion scored its lone td on a 67-yard fourth quarter drive. The drive culminated on a 28-yard td pass from Tyler Huether to Alfonso Hoggard with 2:16 remaining.

Clarion had 168 yards of total offense including only 25 rushing yards and 143 passing yards.

Gino Rometo completed 11 of 19 passes for 100 yards, while Huether connected on 2 of 4 for 43 yards and 1 td.

Matt Foradora caught 4 passes for 47 yards and Jaques Robinson had 4 grabs for 25 yards. Hoggard meanwhile had 3 catches for 58 yards and 1 td, returned 6 kickoffs for 150 yards and rushed 4 times for 9 yards - giving him 217 all-purpose yards.

Mercyhurst had 418 yards of offense including 268 rushing and 150 passing.

Jennings ran for 137 yards and 1 td on 23 carries, while Richard Stokes had 81 yards on 14 tries.

Kensy completed 10 of 17 aerials for 138 yards and 3 td's, while Josh Szeluga grabbed 5 passes for 81 yards and 1 td.

Clarion travels to Gannon next Saturday for a 7pm game, MErcyhurst hosts Slippery Rock next Saturday 1pm.
