CLARION RALLIES PAST KUTZTOWN 26-20

(KUTZTOWN, PA.): Clarion rallied with 26-unanswered second half points, qb Gino Rometo (Plum) scored the go-ahead td on a 1-yard run with 4:14 left and the Eagle defense made a goal line stand with seconds remaining as Clarion defeated Kutztown 26-20 on Saturday afternoon.

Held at Kutztown's University Field in monsoon-like conditions from the remnants of Tropical Storm Hanna, Clarion raised its record to 1-1 while Kutztown dropped to 1-1.

Down 20-0 at halftime, Clarion rallied with 26 second half points to win.

Clarion's first score came on a Gino Rometo 1-yard run with 8:19 left in the third quarter, capping a 7-play, 18-yard drive. The Golden Eagles got the ball on the Kutztown 18 after Mike Verdun stole the pigskin from KU running back Joe Strauss and ran it back 51-yard to the 18.

On the ensuing kickoff Dontay Wilson fumbled the ball at the KU 15 and Clarion's Jonathan Baldwin recovered at the 15 setting up the Clarion offense.

Eddie Emmanuel scored on a 4-yard run at 7:00 of the third and with the PAT Clarion trailed 20-13.

After Clarion's defense rose up and stopped the Bears on their next drive, the Golden Eagles got the ball on the KU 45.

Clarion tied the game on a 5-play, 45-yard drive. On third and six at the KU 41, Emmanuel rushed for 18 yards to the 23. Rometo then hit Jaques Robinson for 8 yards to the 15. On first down Emmanuel got the call again and he split the Bear defense for a 15-yard td run that tied the game 20-20 with 3:18 left in the third.

Clarion drove from its own 35 to the KU 22 early in the fourth, but Rometo's screen pass was intercepted by Craig Croman at the KU 22.

The Golden Eagles then drove 93-yards in 13-plays into the wind to earn the win. Three big plays keyed the drive. Alfonso Hoggard had a nifty 14 yard run to the 17 to get the Eagles out of a big hole. On third and 8 from the CU19, Rometo hit Hoggard with a 19-yard first down pass play to the CU 38. Then, on third and five at the KU 41, Emmanuel ran outside right tackle for 16 yards to the 25. Nick Sipes took the ball from the 11 to the 1 on a 10-yard scamper, and then Rometo scored on a qb sneak with 4:14 left to provide the game-winning points.

Kutztown then moved the ball form its own 28 to the Clarion 1 and had first and goal at the 1 yard line with about 1:30 left. On first down Jimmy Simmons and Bob Kail closed the middle on the attempted qb sneak from Shane Martin which stopped him only inches short of the goal line. On second down Martin fumbled the snap and recovered at the 2. On third down Dane Williams knocked Martin's intended pass to the ground in the endzone and on fourth down, Martin rolled right and tried to get into the right side of the endzone, but linebacker Joe Fox made a diving tackle at the three to stop Martin shot of paydirt which secured Clarion's first win of the 2008 season.
