CLARION - IUP doubled up Clarion in the paint, and the Golden Eagles couldn't overcome an off shooting night in a 66-50 loss to the visiting Crimson Hawks in the PSAC-West opener for both teams Wednesday night at Tippin Gn.
IUP (12-2 overall, 1-0 PSAC-West) had 36 points in the paint to Clarion's 18, and the Golden Eagle hit 30.9 percent of their shots (17 of 55).
Clarion assistant coach Al Modrejewski was the acting head coach for the Golden Eagles Wednesday night. Clarion's 21st year head coach Ron Righter missed the game due to the flu.
Josh Yanke led Clarion with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Gerald Brooks had a double-double for IUP with 22 points, 13 rebounds.
IUP led 35-22 at halftime and built the lead to as many as 20 in the second half before Clarion cut the deficit to 11 with 5:23 to play. But the Crimson Hawks ended the game on a 10-5 run to hold on for the victory.
Shameel Carty added 10 points for Clarion, while Thomas Young and Sean Christiansen each had 11 points for IUP, and Darryl Webb added 12 rebounds.
Clarion returns to action at 3 p.m. Saturday at Gannon, while IUP hosts Mercyhurst Saturday.
