ERIE - The Clarion University women's basketball team battled the No. 24 team in the nation, Gannon, hard until the end before falling 77-62 to the Golden Knights in a PSAC-West game Saturday afternoon at Gannon's Hammermill Center.
The Golden Eagles (5-9 overall, 0-2 PSAC-West) trailed by just seven, 33-26, at halftime before watching Gannon (13-2, 1-1) shoot 62.1 percent in the second half to secure the win.
Bethany Koch once again led Clarion in scoring with 16 points to go with seven rebounds, three assists and a steal. Katrina Greer and Shaina Smith each added 13 points with Smith hitting three 3-pointers. Greer's 13 points moved her into seventh place in school history in scoring with 1,225 career tallies.
Kim Vargas led Gannon with 20 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Brittany Tabron added 17 points, Carrie Nolan 15 points and seven rebounds and Alli Rothlisberger 14 points and eight rebounds.
Clarion returns to action at 6 p.m. Wednesday when it hosts California.
