RIDER EDGES CLARION 19-18

Jan. 31, 2009

(CLARION, PA.): Clarion led 18-15 heading into heavyweight, but Rider's Ed Bordas posted a major decision and the Broncs defeated Clarion 19-18 in NCAA Division I Wrestling on Saturday afternoon.

Held at Waldo S. Tippin Gym, Clarion drops to 7-12 on the season while Rider raises their dual meet mark to 5-6.

Clarion took an 18-15 lead at 197 when senior Jamie Luckett (St. Charles, Mo.) registered an overtime pin against Mike Miller. Luckett and Miller were tied at 1-1 in the overtime, when Luckett took Miller to his back and registered the fall with 25-seconds left in overtime.

Bordas then came out and won a 14-6 major decision over Roman Husam at heavyweight to secure the win for Rider. Husam had narrowed that match to 4-3 early in the second with a reversal, but Bordas reversed back, then score three late period takedowns to lead 12-6 entering the third. An escape and riding time gave him the margin he needed.

Clarion opened the match with #20 Jay Ivanco (So. Monroeville) posting a 7-3 decision over Tim Trivisonno at 125. Ivanco had 5:28 in riding time in the match.

The Eagles moved ahead 9-0 when freshman Cameron Moran (Fr. James City) pinned Jimmy Kirchner at 133. Moran used a cradle to pin Kirchner at 3:12.

Rider bounced back for four straight wins to take a 12-9 lead.

The Broncs got started with Fred Rodger getting a 4-2 decision against Sal Lascari (Sr. Gray) at 141, then Aaron Nester won a 3-0 decision over Greg Lewis (Jr. New Providence) at 149.

Rider's #25 ranked Mike Kessler used a third period counter takedown to defeat Clarion's #26 Hadley Harrison (Jr. McKean) 3-2 at 157, and Jason Lapham decisioned Dominic Ross (Sr. Sharon) 4-1 at 165 to put the Broncs in front.

Scott Joseph (Jr. Export) had another impressive win at 174, posting a 3-2 decision over Mike Ward to pull the Eagles into a 12-12 tie. Joseph had a first period takedown and a third period escape to post the win.

The Broncs #5 rated Doug Umbehauer was pushed to the limit by Clarion freshman Clint Podish (Fr. Sycamore) before losing 7-5. Podish opened with a double leg takedown, and Umbehauer escaped and countered later in the period with his own takedown. Podish escaped and the two were tied 3-3 after the first. Umbehauer's escape and takedown and Podish's escape had the Bronc ahead 6-4 entering the third. Podish escaped and the tow finished on their feet with Podish in deep on a double leg takedown that could have sent the bout to overtime. Umbehauer's riding time finished the bout at 7-5 and had Rider leading 15-12, before the last two exciting bouts.
