CLARION - Bethany Koch and Lizzie Suwala each recorded double-doubles to lead the Clarion University women's basketball team to a 73-50 win over visiting Bowie St. on the second day of the Clarion Classic Monday afternoon at Tippin Gym.
Koch recorded 25 points and 15 rebounds while adding two steals and a block, while Suwala, who had a double-double by halftime, added 19 points and 12 rebounds to go with four assists and a 7 of 8 performance from the floor which included her hitting 5 of 6 3-pointers.
Clarion (2-0) used a 10-3 run at the end of the first half to take a 34-29 lead into the lockerroom before going on a 30-11 run at the start of the second half to blow the game open.
Shaina Smith chipped in with 11 points, three assists and three rebounds for Clarion, who also got eight points and three boards from Courtney Healy. Rachel Graeff added six assists and five rebounds to go with two points.
Bianca Lee was the lone Bowie St. (0-2) player in double figures scoring 11 points. Lakisha Walker and Teaunsha Robinson each added nine points with Robinson chipping in with seven rebounds.
Clarion returns to action Saturday when it hosts Seton Hill at 6 p.m.
In the second game of the Clarion Classic Monday Gannon (5-0) beat Alderson-Broaddus 81-42 behind 16 points from Brittany Tabron and 10 points each from Kim Vargas and Shanna Thompson. Tori Charley led Alderson-Broaddus (0-2) with 10 points.
NOTES - Koch and Suwala are the first Golden Eagle teammates to record double-doubles in the same game since Jan. 11 when Koch had 11 points and 15 rebounds and Sara Pratt added 13 points and 10 rebounds at Bloomsburg. It is the first time two Clarion teammates have recorded double-doubles in the same home game since Feb. 27, 2008, when Pratt had 11 points and 11 rebounds and Jessica Albanese added 11 points and 12 boards ... Clarion shot 45.2 percent (28 of 62) for the game including 10 of 22 (45.5 percent) from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles outrebounded Bowie St. 47-37 ... Koch now has 44 points in two games this season after recording 19 in a win over Alderson-Broaddus Sunday.
