SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. - For the second straight game, the Clarion University men's basketball shot the lights out in getting an 87-74 win at Shepherd on the opening night of the Shepherd Invitational at the Butcher Center Friday night.
The Golden Eagles (2-0) shot 66.7 percent from the field (28 of 42), the second straight game they have shot 66.7 percent and just the fourth time they have shot at least that high since the 1980-81 season, the first year team-shooting records are available.
Clarion started the game on a 13-0 run and led 20-3 6:30 into the game. Jamar Harrison scored seven and Lloyd Harrison six during the game-opening 20-3 run.
The Harrisons - no relation - combined to score 47 points and shoot 15 of 20 from the field with Lloyd Harrison throwing in 28 on 9 of 11 shooting and Jamar Harrison 19 on 6 of 9 shooting. Fellow guard Mike Sherry chipped in with 16 points for good measure hitting 4 of 5 shoots, all 3-pointers and adding a perfect 4 of 4 from the free-throw line. Shameel Carty added seven points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Shepherd (0-1) was able to cut Clarion's lead to seven points, 48-41, early in the second half. But the Golden Eagles used a 6-0 run to get the lead back to double digits. The Rams fought back getting within eight, 76-68, with just over a minute to play before Clarion hit 11 of 12 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Dave Karlson led Shepherd with 30 points on 12 of 15 shooting and 14 rebounds while Tyrone Roach added 21 points.
Clarion returns to action at 3 p.m. Saturday when it faces Central St. (Ohio) at the Shepherd Invitational.
NOTES - Prior to shooting 66.7 percent from the floor Tuesday night against Penn St.-New Kensington, the last time Clarion had shot that high in a game was March 6, 1981, when it shot 68.8 percent in a win at Monmouth in the opening round of the NCAA Division II tournament. Clarion also shot 67.3 percent at California that season, the only two times prior to this week since the 1980-81 campaign that the Golden Eagles had shot at least 66.7 percent in a game ... Harrison's 28 points are the most by a Clarion player since Sherry poured in 30 in an 89-80 win over Shippensburg Jan. 26, 2008, at Clarion. It is the most points in a road game for a Clarion player since Ryan Wells scored 35 in a 79-69 win at Mansfield Jan. 15, 2005 ... Jamar Harrison has started the season hitting 16 of his first 22 shots while scoring 40 points in two games.
