CLARION - Lizzie Suwala's potential game-tying layup with three seconds left was just off the mark, and visiting Seton Hill hung on to beat Clarion 64-60 in a non-conference women's basketball game Saturday night at Clarion's Tippin Gym.
The Golden Eagles (2-1) trailed by nine, 58-49, with 5:02 to play but went on an 11-4 run to close within two, 62-60, on a Bethany Koch 3-pointer with 1:30 left.
After a strong defensive stand by Clarion, the Golden Eagles Courtney Healy got a rebound with 15 seconds to play setting up Clarion's final chance.
After Suwala's miss, Katie Linter hit a pair of free throws to seal the victory for Seton Hill (2-0).
Clarion trailed by one, 34-33, at halftime before Seton Hill used a 14-4 run in the second half to take a 50-37 lead with 10:21 left.
Bethany Koch recorded her second straight double-double for Clarion with 15 points and 14 rebounds, including 10 offensive boards. She added two blocked shots. Suwala had a team-high 18 points to go with five assists, a block and a steal, while Janelle Zabresky added 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench while blocking three shots. Healy chipped in with six points and eight boards.
Linter had a game-high 20 points for Seton Hill and completed a double-double with 11 rebounds. Erika Haitz added 11 points for the Griffins.
Clarion returns to action Dec. 5 at Urbana.
NOTES - Ten of Suwala's 18 points came from the free-throw line, where she shot 10 of 11. She hit her first seven free throws before missing one. The miss ended a streak of 30 free throws in a row made by Suwala dating back to last season ... Overall, Clarion shot 18 of 27 from the free-throw line (66.7 percent) while Seton Hill was 25 of 34 (73.5 percent). The two teams combined to commit 49 fouls (27 by Seton Hill, 22 by Clarion) ... Clarion blocked seven shots in the game giving the Golden Eagles 16 blocks in their first three game ... The Golden Eagles shot 30.6 percent (19 of 62) from the floor including 4 of 22 from 3-point range while Seton Hill shot 37.3 percent (19 of 51).
