JOHNSTOWN - Despite another strong game from junior Shameel Carty, the Clarion University men's basketball team fell 94-79 at Pitt-Johnstown Monday night.
Carty poured 20 points, his second 20-point game of the year, while shooting 8 of 10 from the floor and grabbing five rebounds, but Clarion (3-2) couldn't overcome a hot-shooting night by Pitt-Johnstown (3-3).
Clarion shot 55.2 percent (16 of 29) from the field in the first half but still found itself down 10, 50-40, at halftime after the Mountain Cats shot 21 of 38 (55.3 percent) from the field.
The Golden Eagles cut the lead to five, 62-57, on a Carty layup with 12:57 to play, but Pitt-Johnstown answered with a 17-4 run to put the game away.
Clarion's shooting cooled down in the second half with the Golden Eagles hitting on 17 of 43 shots (39.5 percent) to finish the game at 45.8 percent, only the second time this year Clarion has been under 50 percent.
Pitt-Johnstown ended the contest hitting 52.1 percent of its shots and got 32 points from Patrick Grubbs, who was 13 of 17 from the field and added nine rebounds.
Paul McQueen chipped in 16 points and eight rebounds for Clarion with Jamar Harrison adding 11 points, four rebounds and three assists and Jordan Lessane 11 points. Lloyd Harrison added six points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals.
Andy Byer added 17 points and seven assists for Pitt-Johnstown, while Danny Branch had 12 points and Rudy Roberts 11 points and eight boards off the bench.
Clarion returns to action Friday at Salem International.
