(CLARION, PA.): Clarion got wins from Jay Ivanco (So. Monroeville), Hadley Harrison (JR. McKean) and Jamie Luckett (Sr. St. Charles, Mo.) but it wasn't enough as visiting Pitt defeated Clarion 24-10 in NCAA Division I Wrestling on Friday night.
Clarion's record dropped to 7-13 overall and 0-4 in the Eastern Wrestling League, while Pitt's record went to 4-6-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the EWL.
The Golden Eagles honored seniors Sal Lascari, Dominic Ross and Luckett in pre-match ceremonies at Clarion's W.S. Tippin Gymnasium.
Clarion led 3-0 after Jay Ivanco defeated Chris Albright 3-1 at 125-pounds. Ivanco's third period reversal and riding time provided the winning margin.
Pitt then ran off three straight wins to take a 12-3 lead. #18 rated Jimmy Conroy won an 8-2 decision over Cameron Moran at 133, then Tyler Nauman pinned Lascari at 141 at 5:52 and Pitt led 9-3.
The run continued at 149 when Mark Powell posted a 9-4 win over Greg Lewis and Pitt led 12-3.
The Eagles Hadley Harrison was impressive in his 12-2 win over Phil Sorrentino. Harrison had four takedowns, a two-point near fall, an escape and riding time for his win. He had a six point second period with two takedowns and a two-point near fall, which narrowed Pitt's lead to 12-7.
Ethan Headlee posted a 4-0 win at 165 over Clarion's Dominic Ross, then Karl DeCiantis edged Scott Joseph 3-2 at 174. Joseph appeared to have a go-ahead takedown late in the third that was waved off on the edge of the mat.
At 184 Clarion freshman Clint Podish lost a heart-breaking 5-3 overtime decision to Zac Thomusseit. Podish had a third period reversal, led 2-1 and possessed over two-minutes of riding time with only ten seconds remaining. But Thomusseit scored a reversal with 9 seconds left to tie the match, then scored his bout-winning takedown 30-seconds into overtime.
Jamie Luckett won a 5-2 decision for the Golden Eagles at 197 over Matt Wilps. Luckett scored two, third-period takedowns for his victory.
Pitt's A.J. Hunte notched a 10-9 win over Clarion's Roman Husam at heavyweight. Husam scored a takedown with about 30-seconds remaing for an 8-6 lead, but Hunte escaped, then took Husam down with 156-seconds left and a 9-8 advantage. Husam escaped immediately, but Hunte had riding time and won 10-9.
CLARION NOTES: Clarion travels to Cleveland State on Saturday for a 2pm match... The Match will be on AM 1300 and on the internet on Redzone... Ivanco's record is now 16-10, Harrison 17-11 and Luckett 17-10.
