CLARION - Foul shooting helped No. 4 Gannon topple homestanding Clarion 74-58 in PSAC-West men's basketball action Saturday night at Tippin Gym.
The Golden Knights (19-3 overall, 8-2 PSAC-West), who are also ranked No. 1 in the Atlantic Region, shot 21 of 30 from the free-throw line to help them compensate for the fact that they only outscored Clarion 53-47 from the field. The Golden Eagles were 11 of 15 from the free-throw line.
Clarion (10-13, 1-9) led by five, 17-12, early and was still ahead 19-15 halfway through the first half before Gannon went on an 18-2 run to take a double digit, 35-25, lead at halftime.
The Golden Eagles cut the lead to eight, 37-29, early in the second half before the Golden Knights used a 7-0 run that was fueled by five free throws to get the lead back into double digits.
Josh Yanke led Clarion with 21 points and now has 992 career points including 977 at Clarion and 15 at Gannon as a freshman. Shameel Carty added 14 points and five rebounds for Clarion.
Kyle Goldcamp led four Gannon players in double figures with 21 points to go with seven rebounds, while Pierre Howard added 19 points. Joe Lindsey chipped in 11 tallies with George Johnson adding 10 and Tyler Stoczynski eight points, six rebounds, five assists and four blocked shots.
Clarion returns to action at 8 p.m. Wednesday when it hosts Mercyhurst.
