INDIANA - Daryl Webb blocked a Josh Yanke 3-point attempt as time ran out allowing IUP to escape with an 84-81 win over Clarion in PSAC-West men's basketball action Saturday night at IUP Memorial Field House.
Clarion (10-11, 1-7 PSAC-West) trailed by four, 82-78, when David Blanks hit a 3-pointer from in front of the Golden Eagle bench with eight seconds left to close the gap to one. IUP's Julian Sanders then hit two free throws with five seconds left to put the Crimson Hawks (17-4, 6-2) back up three.
After an IUP timeout, Ron Hollis brought the ball up court for Clarion and passed to Yanke who was about four feet behind the arc when he let his shot go. But Webb was right there to send it back into Yanke's arms to seal the win for IUP.
Clarion trailed by nine, 70-61, with 7:52 to play but went on a 10-0 run to take a 71-70 lead when Yanke hit one of two free throws with 4:16 to play.
IUP, though, retook the lead for good on a layup by Thomas Young with 3:43 to play that started a 10-4 Crimson Hawk run that put them up 80-75 with 22 seconds to play. But Yanke got the Golden Eagles back within two, 80-78, with 15 seconds to play.
Shameel Carty led all scorers with 24 points while adding five rebounds. Yanke chipped in 20 points, while Mike Sherry had 14 points and four assists. Hollis added 12 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Thomas Young led IUP with 21 points and nine rebounds. Gerald Brooks added15 points, Sean Christian chipped in 12, Sanders had 11 and Webb 10.
Clarion returns to action at 8 p.m. Wednesday at California.
